Native American Art in the Present Tense: Family Gallery Walk on Monday, Nov. 27
In honor of National Native American Heritage Month and MPS American Indian Awareness & Family Involvement Week, Kenwood students participated in the Native American Art in the Present Tense residency this week.
Wóokiye Wiŋ (Ojibway/Dakota)
Kindergarten students either painted turtles using acrylic paint or created their own Dakota floral designs using watercolors.
James D. Autio (Ojibwe)
First grade students painted colorful Ojibwe family clan designs using acrylic paints.
Gordon Coons (Ojibwe/Ottawa)
Second grade students created their own personal artwork with a meaning and story behind it using Ojibwe family clan stencils.
Graci Horne (Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota/Hunkpapa Lakota/Dakota)
Third grade students made their own stamps and used them to create unique bandana designs.
Marlena Myles (Spirit Lake Dakota/Mohegan/Muscogee)
Fourth grade students sketched their own animal scenes, using tissue paper as a medium to add color.
Angela Erdrich (Ojibwe)
Fifth grade students sketched and painted fish using watercolors. Students focused on fish that the Ojibwe catch in Red Lake, which mid-20th c. painter Patrick DesJarlait (Ojibwe) depicted in his art.
