Point View School
NEWSLETTER - Week 5, Term 3 - 26 August 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou katoa
It was good to welcome some parents into the Hall for our Senior Speech Competition Finals. Congratulations to all our finalists and a big thank you to families for your support.
We remain cautious and are not willing to encourage large gatherings at school with winter illness and COVID still very active in our local community. However, there are some promising signs with our student COVID numbers falling from 16 at the beginning of August to 4 as I write on 24 August and today is only the second day this year when all our teachers have been able to be at school. Attendance reached a low 87% last week but has climbed back now to a healthier rate of 93%.
If a positive trend emerges, we should be able to consider full school assemblies next term and perhaps also be able to invite our community to enjoy these with us. In the meantime, please continue to follow our guidelines for the orange setting. Adults must remain outside classrooms and cloak-bays when on the school campus unless specifically invited in. Interact with our staff remotely where practical and please always wear a mask at school.
We will be monitoring things closely and will keep you up to date.
Finally, please do not forget to vote for your preferred candidates for the School Board Elections which close on Wednesday 7th September at noon.
BOYS INTERSCHOOL FOOTBALL
12 Senior Syndicate boys played 8 games at William Green. We have an outstanding coach who was a massive factor in our success. Coach Eric who has a daughter in Year 2, volunteered to take our boys and they've been inspired by his passion for the game.
Out of 18 schools, our boys came 3rd in pool play (2nd highest points differential though), one of the best results we have ever had. (Win 6, draw 1, loss 1). Shelly Park and Beachlands ended up 1st and 2nd overall.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATHS WEEK
The Middle School had a fantastic time during Maths Week. We opened our 'maths eyes' and encouraged others to do the same. Here they are completing a maths trail around the school.
TERM 3 - YEAR 5 AND 6 ELECTIVES
During Term 3 our Year 5 and 6 students have the option to choose electives that they would like to engage in. These are usually held for 5 Wednesday afternoons in Term 3. Students really enjoy this opportunity to engage in some different learning. We would love some volunteers to come and take a group of students and teach them a skill you have.
This could be anything from learning a new language, knitting, creating origami, learning a cultural dance or game or any other activity you think would be engaging. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to make connections with other adults and we would really value your time
Please contact Mrs Joshua-Bargh on t.joshua-bargh@pointview.school.nz if this is something you could consider.
DAFFODIL DAY
WATERWISE
Although it’s wild and windy out there at the moment we are looking forward to some calmer weather when we will be able to take our Year 6 students out to participate in Waterwise.
Waterwise is an excellent programme that provides our tamariki with the opportunity to explore and develop confidence in and around the water. The programme introduces basic skills in sailing and kayaking and helps students to enjoy, respect and understand the gorgeous environment we live in here in Aotearoa. Students engage in practical learning that can be applied in many other situations.
The training involves approximately an hour of theory learning and 3-4 one hour long practical sessions at the beach.
If you would like to be part of this fun and essential learning by becoming trained as a Waterwise Instructor please contact Tina Joshua-Bargh at
