January Science Workshops
The Science of Sharks
If you love sharks this is the workshop for you! You will dissect a dogfish shark, and learn to identify its characteristic body parts to better understand how it is related to other sharks and how it swims, eats and breathes. We will discuss external shark anatomy as well as the internal structures that make sharks unique among the critters in the sea. Dissecting a shark is one of the best hands-on ways to learn about this unique marine creature.

ARTiculate - Art in Motion + Machines
Why did people invent things such as the wheel, electricity, or the airplane? Because there was a need for these inventions! What would you like to invent to make your life easier?
We invite your child to come learn with us about how a toy inspired a machine called paperfuge, or how artists get ideas from man-made objects or how your child can create a machine adding their own artistic flare. (Grades 4 -12)
Sewing School Begins!
This popular class, for all ages, starts at the very beginning of learning to sew using a sewing machine. Students progress at their own pace from learning to control their machine, to simple projects, to using a pattern. The incremental steps are designed to teach fundamental skills, while developing good sewing practices.
Dates? Mondays: January 14th, January 21st, February 4th, February 11th, February 18th, & March 4th
To RSVP please email Terri tthurston@yksd.com
National School Choice Week January 21-25
WHAT IS SCHOOL CHOICE?
EMPOWERING PARENTS AND HELPING CHILDREN ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS
School choice means giving parents access to the best K-12 education options for their children. These options not only include traditional public schools, public charter schools, and public magnet schools, but also private schools, online academies, and homeschooling.
Every child deserves an effective, challenging, as well as motivating education. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, therefore children should have the opportunity to achieve their own American dreams.
As research shows, empowered parents who choose the educational environment they believe work best for their kids are more likely to see their children succeed and furthermore, graduate from high school. Every child is unique, and students thrive when they’re matched with learning environments that meet their individual needs.
