District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
Take the Annual Parent Survey
Please take a few moments to complete the BSD Annual Parent Survey during the month of April! The survey helps us to evaluate our progress in educating your child and planning for the future. Our goal is to ensure that every member of our school community feels welcomed, valued, and informed, so it is important for all parents/guardians to complete the survey. The survey data will be summarized so that each person who answers will remain anonymous.
A link to the 2018 Annual Parent Survey will be sent to all valid parent email addresses via SchoolMessenger today, Monday, April 2, 2018. The deadline to participate is Friday, April 20, 2018. You can view a copy of the survey in both English and Spanish on the Research & Reports webpage.
2018 Annual Elementary & Middle School Student Surveys
Each year the District surveys students to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessments of progress on the District’s Strategic Plan. The 2018 surveys for elementary and middle school students will be given to students April 9-June 15, 2018.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the surveys are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey.
Student surveys in middle schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity/race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child do not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
Copies of all 2018 Student Surveys are available on the District’s Research & Reports webpage, or at your child’s school. After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify their school.

If approved, Ballot Measure #34-284 would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.
In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton's elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools.
Ballot Measure #34-284 will be on the May 15, 2018 ballot.

illuminatED at Greenway Elementary School
Greenway Elementary School Students and staff were immersed in innovative lessons and professional development supported by illuminatED on March 7, 2018. illuminatED is a new professional development model designed to leverage early release Wednesdays and flood a school with innovative ideas, lessons, and excitement. The full day model spotlights new classroom lessons and teacher development with a Future Ready and technology integration focus.
Teachers chose from a menu of technology infused lessons, then District innovation strategists came in and taught those lessons to all grades. Activities included empathy centered design, coding and robotics, filmmaking, paper circuits, and using the Future Bus as a Gravitram. Classroom teachers observed and joined in the lessons in their own building alongside their teaching teams.
After the school day, the staff used early release/teacher collaboration time to reflect, ask questions, and plan how to incorporate what they learned into future classes. In one day, every student was taught a Future Ready lesson and every teacher was supported by the Future Ready Team.
One Greenway teacher had this to say, “Amazing. At every moment, all students were engaged and thinking even without something in their hands. There were no dull moments! Dendrites were growing!”
Next up for illuminatED: Nancy Ryles, William Walker, and McKinley this year and plans to expand to more schools next year.
Since 2015, the Future Ready team has hosted professional development “Summits” that brought hundreds of teachers together to learn. illuminatED was born when someone wondered “What if instead of bringing the teachers to the Summit, we bring the Summit to the school?”

Innovation showcased at iX18
Does learning start in the classroom? Does it stop there? Kids today fill their lives with activities that both require and inspire learning. Be it music, film, robotics, or sports medicine, the same thing happens for teachers. As a result, schools today are bursting with innovations that excite students and teachers alike.
Students from throughout the District showcased and celebrated their innovative ideas and lessons happening in their classrooms at the inaugural iX18 on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.
