Rwanda
How Genocide Took Over
Background and How it Started
In the year 1994, Rwanda had a population of 7 million. In that 7 million people were divided into three ethnic groups, 85 % were called Hutu, 14 % were Tusti, and 1 % were Twa. But in between the months of April and July, President Habyarimana, a Hutu, was shot down and voilence began. A Hutu extremist-led government launched a plan to eliminate the entire country's Tusti population. At least 800,000 Tusti were killed.
