Powell Publisher

October 8, 2020

A Note From Mrs. Mathe

This week's Publisher is coming out a day early since we do not have school tomorrow, Friday, October 9th or Monday, October 12th. We hope you are able to enjoy this long weekend!

We have officially made it to the end of the first grading period. I don't know if you are like me, but I finally feel like I can take a deep breath. Even though I finally feel like there is room to breathe, we can not forget our focus. We have to remain diligent in our safety practices, continuing to take great care of our Powell Panthers, and providing great instruction for our students. And that is just what we will do.

Tuesday will be another first day here at Powell for about 125 students returning face to face. A few reminders:

  • There are currently no visitors permitted on campus. We will have plenty of staff available to walk your child to class on Tuesday.
  • Bus route time may change slightly due to new students riding
  • The car line may take a bit longer in the morning and afternoon
  • Remember to display your car rider sign that was mailed at the beginning of the year. If you need to request another sign, complete this form
  • Be sure to communicate to your child's teacher about how they will get home from school
  • Return all devices and chargers borrowed from the school (iPads, Chromebooks, hotspots)
  • You may drop off school supplies in the car line (please label the supplies with your child's name and teacher's name)

There has been an update to our Student Handbook Addendum regarding our grading practices on campus. Our teachers collaborated to tweak our grading policy in order to align our practices across grade levels. Click here to access the updates.

FALL PICTURE DAY- October 16th

Fall picture day is upon us! Next week, October 16th, is our Fall picture day. Great news! We have worked with our photographer to come up with a plan to be able to take the photos of our in-person learners AND virtual students.

In-Person Learners: Students will take their school photo during the school day like a normal year.

Virtual Learners: We will have a photo booth set up outside (weather permitting) for your child(ren) to take their school photo. (if the weather outside is poor, we will set the booth up inside the front vestibule). The photo booth will be open from 8:00 am- 12:00 pm for you to come at your convenience to have your child's photo taken. You will simply pull through the car rider line. Wait in your car until you pull up to the tent area (which will be located at the far end of the front office area). Once your car pulls all the way forward, and you are the next car in line, have your child exit the car, go to the tented area to have their picture taken. Once your child returns to your car please pull away and exit the parking lot. Please wait in your car until it is your turn. We want to avoid crowds gathering outside of the school building.

Below is the link to order your child's photo package. This year, photo packages can be ordered via the pre-pay link or you may send back the paper order form that was sent home this week, along with payment.

1. Go to http://online.phototexasphotography.com

2. Use online order code: PTPUC

3. Select your school (under the October 2020 section)

4. Enter your email address

5. Select desired package and follow instructions to pay

Once we receive the photo packages on campus, you will be notified, and they will be sent home with our in-person learners. Virtual learners will have the option to have the photos mailed directly to your house.

Walk the Pathways Event- Help our School Win!

Big picture

Our school is participating in The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department’s 2020 Walk the Pathways Competition! The school with the most participating students will win a trophy and special first place prize. Walk the Pathways is a friendly, socially-distanced competition between elementary schools to encourage outdoor activity and promote pedestrian safety through experience and games.

Please support our efforts by pledging online to walk the pathways near your home or our school at least once between Sunday, October 11 through Saturday, October 24.

How to participate:

1. Choose a park or pathway near your home or school to visit between October 11-October 24.

2. Show school spirit! Sport your school colors on your walk, chalk the sidewalk with fun art or inspiring phrases or leave painted rocks.

3. Submit an online pledge declaring you walked the pathways. One entry per student.

4. Post a picture of you walking the path on the Powell Facebook page or on Twitter with the #powellwalks.

Optional:

Visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/walkthepathwayscontest for:

· An interactive park and pathway map to plan your route

· Tips and videos about pedestrian safety to review before starting your walk

· Guides for games to “level up” such as chalking the sidewalk, leaving painted rocks and identifying wildlife, trees or plants

o A limited number of chalk kits (3 pieces) are available for students that do not have chalk at home. Call the school to confirm availability.

Thank you for supporting our school. If you have questions, please contact Powell at 936-709-1700 directly or contact The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department at 281-210-3800 or enviro@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.

Nominations for Gifted and Talented Testing

Nominations are now open for Conroe Independent School District Gifted and Talented program. Although the testing will not take place until late January for both remote and in-person platforms, referral requests are accepted at this time. Referral requests can be made by the parents and/or teachers.

All 2nd grade students will take the CogAT assessment in December. It is recommended that parents of 2nd grade students wait until CogAT scores have arrived before nominating their child. The CogAT scores are part of the GT assessment.

If you are interested in referring your child, you may want to discuss this with your child’s teacher at conferences. Referrals will be accepted through December 18. The referral form is attached and will need to be completed and emailed to Sarah Radford at sradford@conroeisd.net. Your child may also return a printed copy to their teacher that can be turned into the front office.
