In honor of this week, our School Counselors, are interested in debunking some common myths about school counseling!
Myth #1: School Counselors only help students in need.
Fact: School Counselors provide ALL students with the supports and a standards-based school counseling core curriculum to address universal social/emotional development.
Myth #2: School Counselors and other types of educators can be hired interchangeably.
Fact: As a Mental Health Designee in the schools, we have completed a specific Master’s degree program and are uniquely trained in areas of human development, trauma, relationships, crisis response, and specific counseling techniques and theories. *Fun Fact* Ms. Perez has an Education Specialist Degree in Mental Health Counseling as well as her Master’s in the same area. She’s also worked closely with those struggling with eating disorders, depression and anxiety.
Myth #3: School Counselors have a job that’s similar to an administrator.
Fact: The role of an administrator can be discipline-oriented in nature or at least perceived that way. The role of a school counselor aims to be restorative, supportive, and student-centered. It’s not appropriate for school counselors to perform disciplinary actions or to assign consequences.
Myth #4: School Counselors give long-term, intensive therapy for students who need it.
Fact: School Counselors provide short-term, brief, solution-focused & structured interventions for students. We refer out when a student needs ongoing therapeutic services.
Myth #5: Guidance Counselor & School Counselor… Same thing, right?
Fact: The term “Guidance Counselor” is outdated - the position focused only on graduation and course selection for secondary students. Today’s school counselors are working hard to eliminate the term! School Counselors are trained professionals who focus on the academic, personal/social and emotional development of all students at every stage of their journey.

Join us for the OSHS 2020 History Fair
National History Day is a year-long academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for 6th- to 12th-grade students. By participating in NHD, students become writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights and artists as they create unique contemporary expressions of history. The experience culminates in a series of contests at the local and affiliate levels and an annual national competition in the nation's capital in June.
OSHS is a proud partner with NHD and our 8th and 10th grade students are required to participate in the annual school level history fair. Winners will progress to the county level where they have the opportunity to make it to state then, ultimately, the national competition. Our school history fair gives students the opportunity to showcase their projects which focus on the theme for the year. This year's theme is "Breaking Barriers in History" and students can create a project in one of the following formats: documentary, exhibit, paper, performance or website. Join us on Tuesday, February 11th between 2:40-3:30pm in Mr. Kennedy's and Mr. Beltramo's classrooms to see what our amazing students came up with this year!

Rosa Parks: "In her own words" Library of Congress exhibition
Rosa Parks (1913–2005) is best known for her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a crowded bus in Montgomery, Alabama, on December 1, 1955. Her arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal event in the civil rights movement that ultimately led to the dismantling of Jim Crow segregation. Rosa Parks became an icon of the movement, celebrated for this single courageous act of civil disobedience, but she is often characterized by misconceptions. Contrary to popular belief, Parks was not a demure seamstress who chose not to stand because she was physically tired. Her calm demeanor hid a militant spirit forged over decades.
The real Rosa Parks was a seasoned activist who organized to free the Scottsboro Boys in the 1930s and helped operate the offices of the NAACP and Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in Montgomery during the 1940s and 1950s. She was punished for the bus incident with death threats, unemployment, and dire poverty, yet was sustained through years of hardship by her strong Christian faith. Parks remained committed to the struggle for social justice and human rights until her death, inspiring millions of people around the world.
Rosa Parks: In Her Own Words showcases rarely seen materials that offer an intimate view of Rosa Parks and documents her life and activism—creating a rich opportunity for viewers to discover new dimensions to their understanding of this seminal figure. The materials are drawn extensively from the Rosa Parks Collection, a gift to the Library of Congress from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

30/30 Dismissal Rule
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that the nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
All oshs volunteers must sign up through the additions program
