October News
Attendance
Getting to school on time is important. Teaching your child/children the responsibility of being punctual is a gift that will last a lifetime. Every minute counts, for all students in all grades here at University Elementary School. Teachers take attendance at 8:20 am and many students promptly go to their Walk to Read classrooms. Walk to Read is an intervention that is in place because we take our students reading success very seriously. Our goal is to support every student becoming the reader they need to be in order to be college and career ready when they graduate from high school. Did you know that reading success in 3rd grade is a predictor of school success throughout their schooling? Students that are not proficient in reading fluency and comprehension by the end of 3rd grade have a tendency to struggle as they progress through the grades 4th through 12th. In grades 3rd and up, much of a student’s learning is dependent on their ability to read. The progression from kindergarten to the end of 2nd grade is crucial. Arriving late to school has a direct effect on your student’s opportunities to learn and progress. I know that your student’s success is important to you. The first step is to get to school early, (on time at the latest) each and every day.
Smencils
Smencils were a huge hit last year and they are back! All proceeds will go to our school library fund. Shelly Agerter will be selling Smencils by the fire hydrant on the blacktop every Tuesday before school and after school. When the warning bell rings, for the start of our school day, sales to students will stop. We do not want Smencils to be the cause of students being late to class.
Botanical Cards
A variety of botanical cards have been donated by a local artist and all proceeds will benefit our University Elementary School garden program. The cards will be sold for $2 per card after school, by the office on Fridays.
Our garden program is a great success! All students have been participating in our school garden program. The lessons are directly related to the Next Generation Science Standards as well as developing a sense of responsibility in both planning and caring for our school garden. Garden lessons are held on Mondays and Fridays. Parent volunteers are needed to assist our Garden Educator in our garden classroom. Picture Make-up Day
This Friday is the day set aside for picture make-ups. If you are unhappy with your student’s school picture, simply return the pictures and they can be retaken. If your child was absent on “Picture Day” they will have their picture taken this Friday.
Student Government
Each class, grades 1st through 5th have had an election to select two representatives to represent their classroom. They held their first meeting last week and planned the school’s first “Spirit Day.” This Friday, October 6th will be a sports themed day. Students can show school spirit by wearing any sports related clothing and/or hats. If your student will be having their school picture that day, they may change once their photo is taken.
Walk-a-Thon
PTA’s Walk-a-Thon is around the corner! This is a major fundraising event for our school. Your child should have come home already with their Pledge Envelopes and all the necessary information. Please help your student to secure pledges. All checks should be made payable to the UELF PTA. The goal is that each student raises $100 dollars. Funds generated will be put into the General Fund which in turn supports our library, assemblies, garden supplies, teacher stipends and so much more! Remember that your input counts when we gather at PTA meetings and approve expenditures.
Meet the Masters
Our art docent program is up and running! Let’s give a big applause to Crystal Wilson and all the parent volunteers that have come together to make this happen. The students are learning about Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch painter, who is among the most influential artists in the history of Western art. As part of this learning experience the students are creating their own renditions of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night.
Big 2 and Big 4 Math
Starting this month, we will be recognizing students who memorize their math facts by posting a star for facts memorized in the MU. Students who memorize their addition and subtraction facts and can demonstrate this in the grade level specific time frame, will earn their way into the Big 2. Students who memorize math facts in all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) will earn their way into the Big 4 and receive a T-shirt advertising their accomplishment. As they progress through the grades the amount of time they are allowed is reduced. Students start fresh each year.
School Site Council
The school site council is a group of teachers, parents, and classified employees that work with the principal to develop, review, and evaluate school improvement programs. The members of the site council are generally elected by their peers. For example, parents elect the parent representatives. This group meets to advise the principal on the academic or school improvement plan. In addition to academic planning, many site councils are also responsible for making decisions about parent engagement, safety and discipline. Everyone is invited to attend School Site Council meetings and provide input. Only the council members are allowed voting rights. Council members have two year terms. Currently, Ryan and Crystal Wilson are the parent representatives for our school. They will be serving their second year this year. Our first meeting will be held on Monday, October 16th at 3:30pm in Rm. B3.
