Snacks vs. Treats... Do you know the difference?
A snack is a small portion of food eaten between meals. A healthy snack is filling and has lots of beneficial nutrients. Treats are therefore occasional foods, usually very appealing and delicious but sadly often rating poorly on the nutrition scale, being high in fat, salt and sugar.
According to the WWRSD WELLNESS POLICY, the District and the Board of Education recognizes child and adolescent obesity has become a major health concern in the United States. In accordance with the requirements of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA), the district has implemented a Wellness Policy that includes goals for nutrition promotion, nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness.
Students have been seen consuming candy during snack time. A lot of snack times are in the morning around 10 a.m. A few examples of what students have been seen eating are skittles, starbursts, twizzlers, m & m’s, chocolate bars and some candies in abundance. It is highly recommended that candy be saved for home and a more nutritional snack be sent into school. Teachers will be encouraging students to save candy for home. For snack ideas and safe snacks go to www.snacksafely.com. Please contact the health office if you have any questions.
Thank you for your cooperation,
