Message from the Principal
What an awesome week in the sun!! We enjoyed having our Playworks trainer, Jackie Cannon, here. Our kids learned new games including 4 Corners, Switch, and Iron Lung as well as games we know like Red Light/Green light and ways to encourage each other when we play.
Here are a few things our staff heard from students about recess:
Are you having fun? “Ohhhhhhhh … yeah!”
“Can we play Switch again?”
“I loved it! We were dancing while we played.”
“My new favorite game is Switch. Did you hear about it?”
“We ran so far and yelled ‘Moooo.’”
“Great job!!”
“It’s SUPER fun!!”
We have even learned some new ways to open recess by hearing our choices and reminding ourselves of what our Salem Woods Way looks/sounds like at recess. When getting ready to close out recess, we are reflecting on how we used our Salem Woods Way and taking off our “recess hats” or taking a deep breath to get ready to learn.
Learn more about Playworks here: https://www.playworks.org
We hope that all of our kids are as excited about recess next week as we are. We will be sure to keep some of our favorite games as options and learn new ones as we move forward. Be sure to check out all of the pictures (below) of our fun!!
Warmly,
Stephanie

MSD COVID - 19 Writing Contest
Monroe School District students,
What has school been like during the COVID-19 pandemic? The Monroe community wants to hear from YOU!
Each year, the Monroe School District mails a community newsletter to all homes within the district’s boundaries (see past editions here). That’s over 16,000 mailboxes! The purpose of these newsletters is to share information and positive news about our schools, students and staff with all community members.
This past year of school hasn’t been like any other before and we want to share YOUR first-hand accounts of what it has been like as students in the next edition of our community newsletter. Many of our community members don’t have students in school and are very curious what school has been like for students this past year. Therefore, we are inviting all students to submit a writing piece that may be featured both in the printed newsletter and on our website. At least three entries will be selected, including one from the elementary (K-5), middle (6-8), and high school (9-12) grade levels.
Writing Prompt:
You are living through history. Future historians may look back on the journals, essays and poetry that ordinary people, like you, are creating now to tell the story of life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Imagine 100 years have passed and it’s now the year 2121. Historians are looking back on a piece of your writing that describes what school was like during the pandemic of 2020-21. In an essay, journal entry, poem, news article or any form of creative writing, describe what school has been like for you as a student during the pandemic.
Writing submissions will only be accepted from students who are currently enrolled in the Monroe School District. Submissions must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. Not all submissions will be featured in the community newsletter and/or district website. If you have questions, please email communications@monroe.wednet.edu.

Counselor Corner - Empathy for others
Often referred to as “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes”,
empathy is the ability to understand how another person feels. It is
Seeing with the eyes of another
Listening with the ears of another
Feeling with the heart of another.
Empathy builds stronger relationships, creates a caring community, encourages acceptance of others and promotes good mental health. Here is a link to Sesame Street explains empathy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_1Rt1R4xbM

Digital Learning News
Breakout EDU This week we have a virtual breakout room. Students have to solve puzzles using critical thinking skills. Some of the puzzles can be quite challenging. I encourage students to keep persevering, using the hints located in the lesson if needed. Involving other family members if also perfectly acceptable. I have included a video on some strategies for the last puzzle we had in DL.
Digital Citizenship
Please continue to remind your student to ensure they are practicing good digital citizenship while they are online. Students should be careful about using Google search and ensure that they are following our district policies - searches that could contain questionable content are flagged and sent to individual schools for investigation.
Digital Learning Award
Each week one class is awarded the Digital Awesomeness Award for outstanding participation. Thank you to all the students who participated in the STEM activity before break and shared their pictures and videos of their forts! This week Ms. Riddle’s class received the award - congratulations!
Office Hours
Office Hours are not during the scheduled time for Digital Learning, which is Friday at 12:30-1:10. Look for the link in the DL lesson for that day.
Keep Calm and Code On!
