Maximizing instruction time
This week I captured some great photos of examples of maximizing instruction time. There are pictures of teachers engaged with students in academic talk during Morning Experiences, students working academically while eating (breakfast and lunch), teachers teaching concepts during Brain Breaks/exercises, and teachers teaching all the way to the bell and even past the bell (after school). There is a picture of a reading group in which there is no down time, students move from task to task at their pace--no waiting for another student, always thinking and working.
Sanford students can achieve and this is what it takes. Every moment of instruction time is precious and should be well planned and intentional.
Working on Math and Eating breakfast--at the same time in Nikki Watson's third grade classroom

Maximizing instruction time: Purposeful Morning Math work in a Gallery Walk format

Exercising or doing math: Both on the 100th day of school

Teacher student connection---all are dressed up on the 100th day of school
Teacher student connection: Jessica Gibson knew who she needed to be with as the students transitioned to the carpet
Comprehension Too
Number Talks
Number Talks build Number Sense
Counting by 10s all the way to 200. Are they taking an exercise Brain Break or Learning--i think BOTH!
Observational Look Fors Next Week:
Grades 2-5: Comprehension Too strategies (prepared questioning based on text that was independently read by students who are working on comprehension)
Maximize Instructional time: transitions are efficient; working on math goals and reading goals that are embedded throughout the learning day.
This includes student work during Morning Experiences, purposeful use of time in Morning Meetings and Closing Circles, and high quality instruction during the full math block and the full reading block.
"Students who are engaged have high levels of student achievement and low levels of disruption."
