Tower of London
The Tower of Power
Who made it ?
In 1066, William the Conqueror establishes the tower to keep hostile Londoners at bay. By 1220's Henry III starts a major expansion of the royal palace. In 1263 Henry III surrenders the Tower to Simon de Montfort.
Why was it built?
Many of the city's leaders submitted to WIlliam. He was confident he would win so he sent one of his men to London to construct a fortress and prepare for his victory. They built many of these and South-east was the white Tower where the London tower would be in the future, proclaiming the power of the woman monarch.
Later on
Many years later kings and Queens stayed there but was intended as a strong hold, a role that remained unchanged right up until the late 19th century.
