What's Happening in PBS?

Week of 9/22-9/26

Hello!

Welcome to another week at the BSFC!

Last week, we modified our lesson plans a bit based on how quickly the kids were working through their drawings so our DNA extraction lab got pushed back. So this short week, we are starting off with the DNA Extraction lab. Tuesday we will be extracting genetic material from strawberries and wednesday the students will be extracting their genetic material from their own cheek cells!

Thursday we will be starting another lesson on what to do with the DNA once we get it out of the cells - which is run it through gel electrophoresis. We won't do an actual gel just yet, but the students will work through paper/pencil activities to understand how it works and how to interpret the results.

Last week, I let you know that the students are able to re-take sections of their test to earn more points - this is due by this Friday 9/26. The students are required to re-test if they did not hit the 70% benchmark. Please help remind them to come in and re-test during collaboration (7:10am-7:30am) or anytime after school with me.

Don't forget about parent teacher conferences this wednesday from 3-8pm. I'd love to meet you!

Finally, we are having our first HOSA meeting this week. We will always host them before & after school to allow as many people to come as possible. The after school opportunity is Thursday after school from 2:30 - 3pm. We don't start until 2:30 so that students who end their day at the high schools have a chance to get back, but we will be playing games from 2-2:30pm while we wait. The second opportunity will be during collaboration on Friday from 7:10 to 7:30pm. This is the same meeting, so students do not have to attend both sessions. We will be discussing fundraising, activities we will be doing this year and community service events.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
