Indians hold off Blackhawks to retain UC rivalry spike
The Blackhawks got six on the scoreboard with a clock-eating initial drive, after gaining possession of the football following a blocked punt by the Indians.
The Union City offense battled back in the second quarter with aerial touchdowns from senior QB Trevor Thompson to senior WR Mason Good to hold a 13-6 lead at the half.
After increasing their lead to 28-6, costly penalties plagued the Indians in the second half, giving MV an open door to mount a comeback. Behind the arm of senior QB Trent Collins, the Blackhawks found themselves down 28-20 with possession of the football late in the fourth quarter. The Indian defense held strong to give their offense a chance to run the clock and secure the victory…which they were able to do.
“We played a good game tonight and were able to avoid any costly injuries, but we definitely need to stay away from penalties if we want to continue to win games,” stated UC head coach Mike Thompson.
Union City (1-1) will host their second home game next Friday against Tri-Eastern Conference opponent Union County. Mississinawa Valley (0-1) welcomes a tough New Bremen team in search of their first win of the young season.
