YARD DUTY RESPONSIBILITIES
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
We are seeing a large number of students visiting the book fair at lunch. It's a great problem to have, but still a problem. In order to reduce the number of "shoppers", we'll be putting the following lunch limits in place next week:
- During lunch, only students with money or an e-wallet will be allowed into the book fair.
- Students may only visit the book fair during lunch "play" time. Any purchases that haven't been completed will be reserved with a post-it note. Students can return after school or the following day to pay and pick up their items.
THIS AND THAT
We missed on last week's Great Shake-out for two reasons. First, I was at the DO for a meeting all morning. Second, I forgot to mention it in last week's newsletter.
We will be having an earthquake drill on Thursday at 8:20. Students will practice "Stop. Drop. Hold on." followed by a quick evacuation drill.
MUSIC/PE ON HALLOWEEN
If you are scheduled for Music or PE on Halloween, please let Jay and Jane if you will not be joining them.
WRITERS WORKSHOP REMINDER
If you'd like to keep a digital record of your students' On-Demand and unit writing scores, here is a Google Sheet template that is formulated to "add" up the points for each feature. There is a tab for each writing genre and another tab for you to group your students for small group instruction.
LISA'S TECH TIP - APPLE TV VOLUME/SOUND
Many of you (and teachers at other sites) are having issues with volume settings while using Airplay. I suspect this issue is caused by an Apple TV update and I am working with the DO to confirm the cause. In the meantime, here is my understanding of the issue and a tip to manage it.
It seems to me that the Apple TV is not "noticing" the volume setting (mute, low, high) on the device when sound is being played. The sound volume starts out very high no matter what the setting on the Macbook (or other device) is. Even if the device is muted the sound plays loudly. I have seen this on MacBooks and my iPhone.
Tip: The only way I have found to deal with this issue is to press a volume button on your device as soon as you start playing. This seems to force the Apple TV to "see" the volume settings on the device. The volume should immediately jump to the proper device setting.
TIKTOK
I saw the tweet below and thought I would share, just in case you're looking for another way for students to demonstrate understanding through technology. You can see the whole clip here.
