As this newsletter arrives at your email, it is hard to believe that the end of the term is quickly approaching. November 13th will mark the last day of our first 10 weeks of the school year. As we continue on through the process, we can't emphasis how important it is for students to check in to each class at least once per day, whether in person or virtual in Google Classroom. The best way for teacher communication is through the Google Classroom Stream and via email. Many teachers also have set up REMIND accounts to keep students informed. In this time of education, communication is so important. Thanks for being part of the positive push from home.

A note from your principal

NRW Students and Families,

I’m very proud of our NRWHS students for their continued efforts to stay safe and take care of one another by following the protocols that have been put in place. Students are doing a tremendous job of wearing masks and social distancing as much as possible while in the building and on the school bus. We must continue to remain vigilant in our efforts and keep safety as our number one priority. Students should stay home if they are sick or showing any symptoms of COVID-19. If you are unsure or have questions about anything related to student illness, please reach out to the high school nurse, Mrs. Randall, or call the main office.

We recognize the challenges that students and families are facing with this new learning environment. It can be difficult to adjust to remote learning and not having direct, in-person contact with teachers each day while balancing everything else that may be going on at home. With that in mind, there are some things students can do at home to help set themselves up for success.

1. Keep a consistent schedule and routine – Students should try to get to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Staying up late and sleeping in will throw off a student’s schedule. Dedicating time during the day to focus on school work will provide structure when students are at home.

2. Dedicate a learning space at home – Students benefit from having a physical location dedicated to learning. This space should be quiet and free from distractions.

3. Ask for help – Students and parents are encouraged to email teachers if they have questions or need additional help while learning at home. Teachers are also available throughout the week with online office hours through Zoom.

4. Monitor progress – Grades are updated weekly by teachers in School Tool. Students and parents can log in to see how students are doing and if they are keeping up with their learning.

Finally, please remember that students must submit their daily attendance form each day they learn from home. The attendance link can be found on the district website or by clicking the link below:

The Yearbook is looking for pictures of your activities, spirit days, Zoom meeting screen shots, and/or sports candids!

Class of 2021 –your senior picture and baby picture are due by November 6. Senior quotes are due by November 20. Quotes must follow the district’s code of conduct, be school appropriate, and you must include the source (person’s name) that said it.

We have been given permission to do an online fundraiser to sell Gertrude Hawk chocolates from their holiday catalog. This is a school-wide fundraiser to help offset the cost of printing the yearbook. Be on the lookout for more information next week.

Yearbooks will be sold this year for $60 until December 18 then the price will increase to $65. Cash and checks can be given to Mrs. Judge at the high school. We are setting up an online pay service as well – more information will be sent out as that is finalized.

We are also in the process of setting up a webpage on the district’s website to keep all this information in one place and easy to find. Look for that in the next few days!

In the meantime, all submissions and inquiries for the yearbook can be directed to Mrs. Judge @ jenniferjudge@nrwcs.org. Pictures can be uploaded directly via Balfour’s mobile app (Balfour is the publication company for the yearbook):

Congratulations to Abigail Wanek

Abigail Wanek has been named a Commended Scholar in the National Merit Scholarship Program! Commended Scholars placed among the top 3 percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT test in 2019. Abigail received a Letter of Commendation in recognition of her outstanding academic promise. Way to go!

Shout-outs to All Students

If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you should have started to see shout outs for the underclassman. We are so appreciative to all of our students and each week we each can pick one to give a shoutout to. Teachers have pitched in in various different ways to provide gifts for those who are randomly selected from those who were nominated. Congratulations to Sydney Hall

North Rose-Wolcott High School senior choir student Sydney Hall has been accepted to the 2020 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Performing Ensemble! She will participate in a virtual performance later this year as part of the All-State treble chorus.

Students are selected for this competitive honor from a group of student musicians statewide. Normally, All-State students are chosen based on their NYSSMA solo festival score, but because the spring solo festival did not take place this year, students were selected based off of their previous solo festival experience in the spring of 2019. To be eligible, students must score a 99 or 100 on their Level 6 solo and receive a recommendation from their teacher.

The LIFT Program

Welcome Back Everyone!

I hope your year is off to a great start. I know there have been a lot of changes in our school community. This year’s LIFT program will also adjust to meet the needs of our students during this time. Our plan, as we move forward, is to begin offering virtual classes starting on October 26th. (If regulations change, we may be able to add “in person” classes.)

The LIFT Program (Leadership and Investment in Future Talents) provides a safe, healthy and nurturing environment for students. We offer everything from Tutoring/Homework Help (support for every day of the week) to Magic the Gathering and French Lessons. Head over to

the district website to enroll in the program (Students and Parent->Program offerings->21st Century LIFT Program). Once you enroll and submit the form, you will see a link on your confirmation page, follow it and you will be able to sign up for your daily schedule.

A group of teachers at the HS got together to post some positive messages for our students on the marquee at the Palace Theater. There are more coming soon but below are a couple of the messages posted so far.

Department Reports

Art by Mrs. Allen

Drawing and Painting just finished up a unit in observational drawing. They drew multiple versions of still life pieces and then ended with very large charcoal renderings of their objects. There are a few pictures here to show you the scale of the work. They are now moving into textures with printmaking and found textures. We will be bringing the two techniques together (observational drawing and texture creation) in their next project.

Intermediate Drawing and Painting has been creating work within a Sustained Investigation. The Sustained Investigation is an area of study in which they feel they would like to work in throughout the year. Their first project needed to incorporate an actual book in the design. They will be finishing up this piece soon and moving into a printmaking process within their Sustained Investigation.

Advanced Drawing and Painting, AP Drawing, and AP 2D Design have all been working within their Sustained Investigations. Our AP students are figuring out their direction as they create multiple pieces for their 15 piece portfolio. All students just had a whole class zoom critique to take their current work into the final form.

CAP Digital Photography is wrapping up their first multi project photo shoot on lighting. They also had their class critique in this last week and are bringing their pieces toward the printing stage. There are a few images here of them in progress.

Advanced Photography students are taking film photos within areas of concentration to develop a series of prints. Here are a couple of their first prints created in the darkroom.

MECA (Maine College of Art) met with the Intermediate Drawing and Painting, Advanced Drawing and Painting, and AP students via Zoom to give a presentation about what their college looks like and how to go about applying to an art school.

English Language Arts

Mr. ONeill English 11,12,( FLCC)

- What topics are you covering currently?

We are deep into a sci-Fi unit in which we are reading the novel, Ender’s Game. Students will cover the skills they need to succeed on the regents exam as well as reflect on their own development as they get set to graduate and head out into the world.

- What are things you would like to see from our students and families in regards to your subject area?

Students – please keep up on the readings and activities for the virtual days. It will be difficult to pass if the virtual work is neglected plus you will fall behind in the book.

- What kind of things are you looking forward to?

I am looking forward to seeing all of my student graduate with some usable writing Pieces under their belt (career research, writing samples, resumes, etc.) and a sense of direction as they move into living their best lives.

Foreign Language

This month in NR-W HS Spanish classes, students are learning all about the popular holiday of Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. While it originated in Mexico, it is celebrated all over Latin America and even parts of the United States. People often think that this holiday is just like Halloween, but it is actually more similar to our Memorial Day. People celebrate the lives of their deceased family members and loved ones! Check out more similarities and differences of the two holidays below:

Miss. Wasielewski

In Algebra 2 we are working on exponents and radical equations. We are learning how to solve radicals using properties of exponents. In Pre-Calc we are connecting exponentials and logarithms together. We will learn how to use properties of each function to solve real world problems. In AP Calc we are in the middle of our derivatives journey. We are learning to apply our derivative rules to application problems. I hope all my students continue to work hard and ask questions when they come up. We had a great start to the year and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings! Any student who tells me their favorite part of math so far this year can earn extra credit on their next test!

Algebra I

Current topic: We are currently working on solving systems of linear equations. We will learn to solve systems both graphically and algebraically. We end the unit by looking at some real world problems! Then, we will move on to inequalities.

A word from Mr. Kapcinski- I am so glad to be back in person this year. I enjoy connecting with my students and care about their success. I am so proud of them- they have made the best out of this situation and are one of the hardest working groups I’ve seen! I am looking forward to the rest of the school year!

Students in Mrs. Mahoney's Algebra Class have been learning the fundamentals of algebra. We have been learning all kinds of wonderful things such as: multiplying polynomials using the box method and double distribution; combining like terms to simplify the algebraic equations; and most importantly we have been learning the importance of why we need to use algebra in our lives!

It has been fantastic to work in-person with the hybrid learners and terrific to get to know and work with our virtual students too. I can't think of a greater group of people to get to work with, as we navigate our learning in a very unusual year. Thank you for your patience and kindness as we work through this new learning curve.

It has been so much fun learning together! For an extra credit, just hop in any of my office hours so that we can chat! I am so proud of each of you and so proud to be at the amazing, awesome North Rose-Wolcott High School! We are Cougar Strong and we have got this!!!

Applied Geometry- The current topic of study is Constructions. Students are learning how to use a compass to construct angle bisectors, perpendicular bisectors, and copies of angles. This month students learned how to design a square picture frame using angle bisectors and miter joints! Angle bisectors are constructed to form miter joints. Miter joints are made by cutting each of two parts to be joined, usually at a 45° angle, to form a corner, usually at a 90° angle.

HS Instrumental music: Music is still alive at NRW! The band room is filled (to COVID standards) with musicians each day from morning through afternoon and even virtually! I commend all the instrumental music students for rolling along this roller coaster ride with me! We’re learning a great deal more about our instrument, music history, and music theory. One of our main goals is how to adapt, learn and perform with different musicians and/or different music genres. We truly miss working towards a large concert, but don’t worry – Mr. Witkiewitz has some ideas that will hopefully still bring some musical magic to everyone in the upcoming months! Go NRW Cougars!!

Physical Education by Miss Bromley

Hey everyone,

Just a quick shout out from the HS PE Department letting you know of some exciting things we are doing in virtual PE class. One of the things students are learning about is individualized fitness. They are gathering information on ways to achieve their goals through Social /Emotional and physical activity, keeping logs, setting goals and having mindfulness discussions in google meets (class) and working out to our custom workouts Mr. Wetherell and I do. So much FUN!!!!


Miss Grosser -

In Living Environment, students finished unit 1! The hybrid students designed their own experiments and had to hypothesize if they could do everyday tasks without their thumbs. So not only was there practice with experimental design, they also learned just how important our opposable thumb really is. On to characteristics of living things, and my favorite, HOMEOSTASIS!

Mr. Wojieck- In Earth Science we are working on the last topic area of Astronomy and will be wrapping up the Astronomy Unit shortly. Your students should have an understanding about the universe and how things are connected. We have covered 6 of our Dirty 30 topics to master the Earth Science Regents Exam. Our next unit is Meteorology

Social Studies

The 12th grade social studies classes have been learning about and tracking the upcoming presidential election. They have learning about the political platform and the key issues that are important to most republicans and democrats. They have watched some of the debates and come up with topics that could most affect young Americans just leaving high school. Each student is working on deciding who they would vote for and why they made that choice.

While many of us are tired of the constant political commercials, signs and print advertisements, we all agree that it is important to make an informed decision and exercise your right to vote.

Our next unit is going to involve researching a government conspiracy theory. I am sure that will lead to some very interesting and strange discussions.

Ms. Maynards World History Classes:

Parents/Guardians do not forget to sign up for remind so we can stay in touch!

In Pre-AP we are finishing up our first Essay this week! For World History 9 we are finishing up early civilizations and getting ready to tour the various belief systems followed around the world.

Remember that ALL completely virtual students are required to sign up and show up for a 10-minute meeting with me every other Wednesday. I wish to get to know you better and be able to help you on a more individual level. Sign-up sheet is in the Information & Resources section of our Google Classroom. Email me with any questions.

If you need help - my open office hours are M/T/TH/F from 10:40 to 11:15AM. Otherwise email me and we will schedule a time to meet virtually from 1:30 to 2:45.

Mike Grasso’s US History Class:

Student’s in Mr. Grasso’s US History class have been investigating causes of the American Revolution. Soon we will be exploring our earliest form of government – the Articles of Confederation - and its eventual replacement – the U.S. Constitution.

Mr. Grasso recommends students working at least 30-45 minutes on history related assignments each day. Try to be as focused as possible so you can direct all your attention for your task. Mr. Grasso is willing to add an extra credit grade for any student who drops by his office hours before the end of the marking period (Every Wednesday 9:30-11:30). Also, reminder that any assignment can be turned in for quarter 1 up to the end of the marking period.

Our World History 10 students have learned about Absolute Monarchy in France, the Enlightenment philosophers and their impact of the American and French Revolutions. We are in the midst of learning about the guillotine and the Reign of Terror. Ask your kids about what they now know why the guillotine was invented or how many people died by it in this Radical phase of the Revolution. We will be learning soon about the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte and the influence the French Revolution had on the Latin American Revolutions in Haiti led by Toussaint L’Ouverture, Mexico led by Father Hidalgo and South America led by Simon Bolivar.

Typically we host a financial aid night at the high school. Due to COVID, we are unable to host a "live" event. Parents tips in supporting hybrid/virtual students

Virtual and hybrid learning have created a new model of education, which involves parents more in the learning process than it ever has before. It can be very challenging balancing the demands of work, household responsibilities, family and multiple children learning hybrid or fully virtually. The faculty, administration and counseling staff are here to support your child and you as we continue on this journey. Below are tips/suggestions for parents to support their child with at home learning. Teenagers often times need help with organization, motivation and accountability.


· Establish routines and daily schedule —Work with your student to create a daily routine of checking for new learning & assignments, seeking help from teachers and completing assignments. Create a schedule of when to do school work, household chores and free time. Chunk days into predictable segments. Set a consistent wake up and bed time.

· Set up the learning space— Setup a physical location that’s dedicated to school-focused activities. Make sure it is quiet and free from distractions.

· Set up the digital space—check that computers and internet connectivity are working properly. If not, reach out to our Technology Department for assistance

· Utilize communication tools-encourage your student to check their school email and google classrooms on a regular basis. These are the primary forms of communication from school


· Establish goals/expectations—talk with your child about goals for the school year regarding learning and grades. Try to connect these conversations with future plans for career and work. Revisit these goals time to time.

· Encourage a growth mindset—remind your child that learning can be challenging and it is okay to make mistakes. People often learn best from mistakes. Encourage them to ask questions and ask for assistance.

· Be flexible/seek help—There may be times when your child isn’t able to complete something without support. Problem solve with them. Encourage them to message their teacher or log into virtual office hours. All teachers have virtual office hours Monday thru Friday, where students can seek help.


· Make sure all work is completed— log into your student’s Schooltool account to monitor grades and assignments.

· Accountability— if your student is not meeting expectations have a clear plan ahead of time for fair and logical consequences. Develop expectations about work completion, organization, asking for assistance and etc.

· Review progress— NRW HS school teachers will be updating assignments and grades on Schooltool at least a weekly. Establish a weekly time with your child to review their progress and discuss their thoughts.

· Celebrate successes and problem solve any issues.

Hello from the Library Media Center

The library is busy putting together Take and Make kits for the students who signed up! Plant your own Succulents and make your own bracelets are going out this week to those students who signed up. If you are interested in joining us for next month’s Take and Make kits, check out the library Bitmoji class that is coming out on 10/30! If you are doing the Take and Make kits, please take pictures and send them to ajohnson@nrwcs.org, and if you post them on Instagram, tag the library @nrw_hslibrary

I just want to say how very proud I am to be part of such an amazing community. We have the best students, staff, families, and teachers. You are working hard, and that is something to be proud of. If you need anything, please reach out to me!

The fall sports season is off to a great start. It is great seeing athletes back on the field. Every athlete has been out on the field, on the court, on the trails, or in the pool working hard. Each team had several great accomplishments, the boys soccer team started the season 4-0. The girls soccer team recently beat Mynderse 4-0. The girls tennis team recently won a double header against Clyde-Savannah. The cross-country team had a successful home meet and runners are continuing to cut down their times. The girls swim team had many people PR recently, and Autumn Davenport qualified for sectionals.

We would also like to recognize our fall senior athletes for their contributions to NRW and the athletics program:

What is one thing you hope all students feel when they enter your class or remember when looking back at your class in the future?

The one thing I hope all my students remember when looking back on World History is that we, as individuals, have a voice and can make a difference when we see injustice. Its not about your wealth, or status, or education; its about courage. When people have the courage to stand up for what they believe in, great things can happen.

What are some of your hobbies and activities outside of school?

I love to travel and see the world. I really enjoy taking my own children and my students on epic journeys that they will remember forever as I do. I enjoy downhill skiing, hiking, and biking with my family.

If you could tell your teenage self one thing, what would you tell them?

Don't fret cuz' its all gonna work out...great!

The art room is place to feel comfortable to make "mistakes" and see where they lead, as mistakes and the recovery from them are sometimes our best lessons.

What are some of your hobbies and activities outside of school?

Drawing, painting, reading, playing with my kids, baking, anything crafty, exploring

If you could tell your teenage self one thing, what would you tell them?

Be you, not what you think other people want you to be.

What is one thing you hope all students feel when they enter your class or remember when looking back at your class in the future?

Enter my room with a relaxed ability to fail & become successful. I would like student to remember the path ventured on together, how to become successful, and never limit yourself just to what others want you to become.

What are some of your hobbies and activities outside of school?

I enjoy spending time with my family and being on the water. Performing as a musician, percussionist or drummer is always a rewarding part of my life. I've also always always been intrigued by repairing anything that's broken.

If you could tell your teenage self one thing, what would you tell them?

I'd tell myself that there are just as many shy girls out there! Go up to them and say hi! Don't sell yourself short - the worst that can happen is they say no

What is one thing you hope all students feel when they enter your class or remember when looking back at your class in the future?

I hope all students know that I care a lot about them! Even after they move onto the next grade level.

What are some of your hobbies and activities outside of school?

I love spending time with my children. I am a dance mom, hockey mom, and a baseball mom. I adore watching my kids do what they love. I love baking and designing cakes. My friends and I design and make t-shirts and that is one of my favorite things to do. I also recently rediscovered how much I love running.

If you could tell your teenage self one thing, what would you tell them?

I would tell young Wendy to save all the money. Also, that none of that high school stuff would matter one day, so to stop worrying so much.

What is one thing you hope all students feel when they enter your class or remember when looking back at your class in the future?

That they didn't only learn the math that the class was teaching them, but also were able to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills that have uses outside of the classroom along the way.

What are some of your hobbies and activities outside of school?

Sports (Baseball, Golf, Skiing), Boating, Hunting

How many years have you been working in education and where? I taught math for 5 years all at NRW.

What is one thing you hope all students feel when they enter your class or remember when looking back at your class in the future?

I hope students remember the exciting times we had together and I am always here for them. I hope they also remember to persevere through anything in life, just like we persevered through everything together in math!

I have been a School Counselor for almost 11 years. I started at Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School and then came to North Rose-Wolcott 5 years ago.

What is your area of expertise here in the school?

Individual and Group Counseling, Crisis Counseling, Social/Emotional Development, Career and College

What is one thing you hope all students feel when they enter your class or remember when looking back at your class in the future?

I hope that students feel safe when they are in my office, a place they feel comfortable sharing whatever it is they may need help with. I hope they feel empowered to be the best version of themselves.

What are some of your hobbies and activities outside of school?

I love dancing and my dance parties at home with my little girls. I enjoy reading a good psychological or suspense thriller and love scary movies and anything Halloween. I look forward to our family camping trips and spending time with friends and family.

If you could tell your teenage self one thing, what would you tell them?

I would tell my teenage self that the tough stuff will get better and if it doesn't, there is so much you can learn and grow from it even when it doesn't feel like it is possible at the time. I would also say to take more risks and try to not worry as much what others think of you.

Class of 2021 -This year is not exactly what we wanted or expected, but we are going to work hard to keep the senior class bonded and making memories. Please join our Google Classroom if you haven’t already. The code is- p6onyd5.

Mrs. Hawkinson would love for you to send pictures of senior class memories so that she can begin to make a slideshow for the end of the year. You can email them to her at whawkinson@nrwcs.org.

Our class officers this year are Aubrey Liseno (President), Lucy Zhang (Vice President), Brianna Vezzose (Treasurer) and Lannon Loveless (Secretary). If you are interested in being a student council representative for the Class of 2021, let Mrs. Hawkinson know.

We were waiting to see what kind of extracurricular activities were approved before we had a meeting. We are now approved to have senior class meetings. Our first meeting was on Thursday, October 22. At this meeting we decided that we are going to purchase a hoodie, t-shirt and a mask for each senior out of class funds. Stay tuned for more information on designs and how to let us know your size on the Google Classroom Page.

Our next meeting will be in room 321 on Thursday, November 5th . Mr. Bradley will attend the meeting so that we can ask him about some of our questions and concerns about senior year in COVID conditions. A meeting link will be provided on the Google Classroom page for those who cannot attend the meeting.

Class of 2023 -

Letters will be sent home soon to the students who still have outstanding candy bar money from the spring. If you have not returned your candy bar money, do so immediately to Mrs. Landry. Meetings will be starting soon.
