I hope everyone enjoyed Spring Break last week. Spring Break seems to fall at just the right time every year, a time when it's necessary to slow down and relax. We left for the break on a positive note: Gladiator Games!
Gladiator Games was a huge success on March 11th. The PTA exceeded their fundraising goal of $20,000! Wow! All of the funds raised will go into programs, supplies, and equipment for our classrooms. Teachers submitted a wish list to the PTA and the Board voted on which ones could be supported through Gladiator Games revenue. There are so many people to thank for the success of this huge endeavor, first and foremost, our PTA. We are truly fortunate to have such an active and supportive organization.
A lot of prep work and organization went into planning the event, however, it could not have occurred without our parent volunteers manning each station on the big day! A big thank you for being present and making it a great day for our students. Jimmy John's owner, Kristi Haley, provided lunch for the volunteers and even our staff! We are so appreciative of the sponsors as well. We had over 23 sponsors for this event. Thank you!
In addition to the games, the focus was on academic integrity and anti bullying. The PTA brought in a speaker, Jon Coker, with Creative Hearts Inc. He delivered an enthusiastic and sincere message to our students about being nice to each other. The big take away from his message was about creating a "brand" for yourself, much like businesses do today. He framed the message around social media and asked the students to think about what they post, how they respond to a post and what that says about themselves. It was a powerful message. I included a short segment of his presentation so you can hear the message he delivered to the students.
We sent the students back into the classroom to create a "brand" that represented themselves. Each class put the "brands" together to create a quilt and hung them outside their classroom. I've included a picture of the quilt from the students in Mrs. Marthis' class. Ask your child about their "brand" and what they included on their image.
Our choir performed at UIL last week and all three groups earned Sweepstakes! The following groups participated: Intermediate Treble Choir, Advanced Tenor Bass, and Advanced Girls. Great job to all the students that participated! They couldn't have done it without their director, Kathy Settles-Horejsi. Congratulations!
I hope your family enjoys the day off on Friday!
It's a GREAT day to be a Gladiator!
