Dress for the Weather
Please be sure to send your child with the appropriate outerwear each day. This should include winter jackets, snow pants, boots, mittens/gloves, and a hat. Please label all items with your child's name. As a rule, students go outside for recess every day when the outside temperature (factoring in the wind chill) is at or above zero degrees. Each recess is twenty minutes which can feel like a long time if they are not dressed warm. Some students are also walking to and from school and some may be standing at their bus stop for several minutes. We want all of our children to stay healthy so they can do their best at school!
Emergency Closings
Inclement weather may necessitate the closing or delay of schools. If schools are closed, this will also include the cancellation of extracurricular activities and events at the community pool, unless otherwise announced. In addition to District social media accounts, local television/radio stations, and the District website, HSSD will send weather delay and closing updates via text message . To receive text alerts from HSSD: text the word “Yes” to 67587. In addition to local radio and television stations, weather conditions can be checked on-line at https://www.hssdschools.org/

The Giving Tree
Thank you for helping us serve over 600 families for our Holiday Store and pantry in December. As the new year arrives, many of us think of organizing and cleaning up from the Holidays to start fresh in the new year. For this reason this month we are collecting household cleaning products that we can have available at pantry.
Please feel free to send donations in a plastic bag with your students to put in the collections bins/carts near the main office of school. Items can also be dropped off during school hours. The Giving Tree appreciates your continued support.

2022-2023 Howard-Suamico School District Budget
During our budget hearing and annual meeting on September 26, 2022, community members received a detailed review of the school district’s 2022-2023 budget and voted to adopt it as presented. During the meeting on October 24, 2022, the Board of Education approved a budget of $105,726,920 in revenues and $199,653,933 in expenditures.
On the expenditures side, $93,337,003 are due to the capital projects funded by the April 2021 facilities referendum. Facilities updates can be found at: http://hssdschools.org/community/facilities- update. Roughly 67% of the general expenditures are invested in employee salaries and benefits.
On the revenue side, the primary building blocks of school funding are property taxes and state aid.
Revenue limits cap the amount of funding a district can generate and in 2022-23 there was no
increase in the revenue limits, meaning if state aid goes up, levies tend to be reduced, and vice
versa.
For the 2022-23 school year, state aid for the Howard-Suamico School District has been certified at
$40,747,004. This is a 4.64% increase over 2021-22. The tax levy rate has been reduced by 30
cents to $8.69 resulting in revenues of $34,702,982. Core drivers in the reduction of the levy rate
were the increase in property valuations and the increase in state aid, considering the unchanged
Revenue Limit.
The Board of Education will continue to consider investment avenues for scholastic achievement and excellence. For more information about the Howard-Suamico School District budget please visit our website at www.hssdschools.org.
