Sussex Star Bursts!
Principal's Corner
A Note From the Principal
After further consideration as well as feedback provided from our families, K-5 principals have decided that students can wear Halloween costumes to school if they choose. Students may also wear their school spirit colors. To ensure the health and well being of our school community we ask you to adhere to the following costume guidelines:
1. Students choosing to dress up must wear their costumes to school. Students will not be able to change at any time.
2. No weapons, swords or handheld accessories. Students have enough items to carry.
3. No Halloween masks. Students are required to wear CDC guideline masks as stated in our district's Reopening Plan.
4. Halloween costumes must be one that is functional with the classroom environment (able to sit and move safely within the 6ft parameters and can be worn all day with comfort and ease.)
Our Home and School Association (HSA) assists in providing an effective education by contributing financial support and/or programs to enhance the academic and social growth of our students. If you have not signed up to receive the HSA eBlast, please visit the HSA section below.
As we continue to look for ways to refine our practices, we are making a minor change to our arrival process in the hopes of expediting the process further. When arriving, please pull down to the furthermost point, not to pass the orange cone.
- Please have your child prepared to exit the vehicle when you pull forward. (Masks on, backpacks ready etc.)
- Students will exit the vehicle and line up near a staff member.
- Parents will exit the parking lot. You do not need to wait for your child's temperature to be taken.
- Temperatures will be taken. If an issue arises, your child will be sent to the nurse for further assessment and you will be notified if additional instructions are necessary.
I am hopeful that this minor change will allow families to enter/exit the parking lot with efficiency and avoid a backup onto Sussex Avenue while we ensure each student has their temperature taken.
As always, I thank you for your continued support, patience, and flexibility.
With Great Appreciation,
Lorri Vaccaro, Principal

Enroll online, or to speak with a program advisor, call 1-800-477-1329.This part of the newsletter will have a question or a topic for you to discuss with your child(ren). This can be done on the way to school, on the way to sports practice, before dinner, at bedtime, etc.
Each week there will be a “something to think about” question and a “something to talk about” question. The “something to think about question” is for you as a parent to reflect on for yourself. The “something to talk about” question is for you to discuss with your child. These exercises are meant to stimulate a conversation on race, equity and inclusion in America.
Let’s Talk About Race, Equity and Inclusion
Week Six
Parent Reflection Question: Consider your social network. Do you have a diverse group of friends or do you tend to associate with people who look like you? If you don’t have a diverse group of friends, why do you think this is so?
Sixth Question For Child: Why do you think some people don’t like people who look differently from them? For instance, some people don’t like others whose skin color is different than theirs or who have different religious beliefs or speak a different language.
Semana seis
Week Seven
Parent Reflection Question: What is your experience with immigration? Do you have an immigration story? Did you or your family come to the United States by choice? If so, do you know why your family immigrated to this country?
Seventh Question For Child: Have you ever met someone who immigrated to this country? Let's say we needed to move to a new country, how would you feel? Would you be scared? Excited? What new things might you have to learn (for example: a new language, customs, eating new foods, etc)?
Semana siete
Students spend time discussing this quote throughout the week. They discuss what they believe it means, why they believe the person said it. Finally they reflect on these questions and determine how they can apply it to their lives.
What does the quote mean? (Literal but not a repeat of the quote)
Why might __________ have said this?
How can you apply this to your life as a learner?
What lesson can we as a society learn from this quote?
