Lent and Self-Discipline Continue

Our emphasis on Self-Discipline continued this week. The students strongly witnessed this Maverick Value this week amidst the unique challenges and temptations associated with IA Testing and the various "Orange Days."

Still, one never truly masters Self-Discipline. There are always areas in our lives where we can more fully surrender to God. Prayer and self-examination are potent and effective means to identify those areas and enhance one's Self-Discipline.

Check out the article below on such surrender.

A Year For Mercy!

Please check out the two articles below about Pope Francis' declaration of a Holy Year for Mercy. The first is an overview of the declaration, and the second is a very solid explanation of some of its implications. Specifically, the author states that it means that "Francis wants us to know how much God loves us." Amen!

For Those With A Growth Mindset, Wrong Can Be Good

The author explains that failure is essential for learning. Specifically, she writes: "What we often lose in this conversation is something else—the need to teach kids how to fail. Yes, that four-letter word." See the full article below.

Witnessing The Gospel, Middle School Style

Check out this inspiring story of a group of middle school boys who came to the defense of a girl with Down syndrome being bullied. One of the boys mentions how we are all the same because God made us the same way.

Congratulations To Ms. J., Our Maverick Teacher Of The Year!

Her fellow teachers selected Ms. J, who teachers Kindergarten, as our 2015 T.O.Y.! Sister Juana honored Ms. J with this speech:

The mission of SMMS focuses on empowering through pursuit of excellence in faith, academics, and service. Each of us here is a student of this mission and together we journey as we grow and become a community and are witnesses of the mission of Jesus, the Christ. The teacher of the year is an affirmation and a recognition of a teacher, who exemplifies our mission.

Ms. Paulina Justiniani, the teacher of year, is a leader not only in her classroom but shares this leadership in the community by meeting and collaborating with the faculty and staff after school hours and on weekends. Although she has a wealth of knowledge, she is open to learning from colleagues and her students.

She shares her faith quietly and is able to name her flaws and celebrate God’s graciousness. Ms. J is open to growth in her faith and as an educator. She seeks to release the potential in every student and in herself.

Embracing her cultural heritage, she takes initiative in using her skills to make improvements that need to be made in the school. Like our patroness, St. Mary Magdalen, she is audacious in imparting knowledge and in being of service.

College Prep 2.0

Our 8th graders will visit UTSA next week Thursday. We visit college campuses for a number of reasons, including:

- it makes college more tangible and present rather than some lofty, distant idea

- therefore, it makes college more accessible, but also candidly reveals some of the obstacles facing our students in their quest to graduate from college

Have You Applied? $30 and 30 minutes can save you hundreds of dollars on tuition. I am happy to sit down with any of you who need help with the application.

As a reminder, the first round of funding for the 2015-16 school year will be the first week of April. The deadline for that round has passed. However, HFF will send a round every month thereafter up until August. Applicants wanting to be considered for each round must have applications completed by the 15th of the prior month.

Please see the new link below to apply. As there is a new website, it's a bit tricky to reach.

The 67th Rey Feo, John Gary Herrera, visited St. Mary Magdalen today! In fact, both the Reinas, the entire Court, and even Ronald McDonald came! They all emphasized the necessity of education, particularly going to and graduating from COLLEGE.
