Scottsboro trial comparison with Tom Robinson trial

Tom Robinson trial in to kill a mockingbird

In the book to kill a mockingbird, Tom Robinson was convicted of raping a white woman. Mayella, the white woman, and her father, Bob Ewell, claimed that Tom Raped Mayella. Tom Robinson sates in the book he did no such thing. in the trial, of course the jury believe Tom was guilty and he gets put in jail.

Scottsboro trail in reality

in 1931, nine African american men were convicted of raping two white women on a train car. the women reported this after the men were in jail for having a stone-throwing fight with some white men. the women said she was raped by 12 African american men with pistols and knives. the men of course were found guilty and thrown in jail.

comparison of the two trials

These two trials are very similar in my mind. Tom Robinson was not guilty and neither was the nine men, but they were both put in jail for something they didn't do. I believe the reason both groups went to jail when they weren't guilty is, because of the color of their skin. I think this is so wrong, but it is most likely true. These two trials were in the same time period where race was a big issue.
