Registration forms are being sent home for the many upcoming events at Gleason. Please be sure to return your form by the due date to avoid waiting in line to receive your visitor badge.
We are preparing our third, fourth, and fifth grade students for the next round of STAAR. Our campus will be closed for campus lunch visitors or campus visits on these dates. Please refer to the upcoming events section of the Paws. Students will need to purchase lunch on campus or bring a lunch from home with them upon arrival. We will not be able to accommodate lunch deliveries on these three days. We appreciate your understanding as we work to provide a positive testing environment for our students. If you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader, please ensure they get a good night’s rest prior to the test and start their morning on a positive note. Gleason will provide breakfast and a snack for all students testing.
We our looking forward to hosting our first Mother-Son Prom. Please bring dinner for yourself and student. We hope you will enjoy Gleason Mother-Son Prom. The prom will begin at 6:30 PM.
Please read the flyer below for important information about “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day”

According to CFISD Board policy FFAC (local), medications must be retrieved from the clinic by a parent/guardian or designated responsible adult. Please make arrangements to pick-up your student’s medications by May 30th no later than 12:00pm. Medications not collected by this deadline will be disposed of according to CFISD policy. Have a wonderful rest of the year.

Summer Reading
PBIS NEWS
We appreciate your support in helping us promote positive behaviors! Our students had a lot of fun receiving Egg-Cellent Awards. Students who were displaying roarin' behavior by going above and beyond were able to choose an egg from the front office and crack it open to see what prize they won. We're proud of all of our egg-cellent students! We will have another positive behavior incentive in May that your child may earn.
Over the summer, please continue to practice "ROARin" behavior. We cannot wait to see the growth in our students when they return in August!
From the Counselor....Mrs. Salazar
This month's core essential value is perseverance. Perseverance means refusing to give up when life gets hard. We want to encourage all our students to show perseverance this month as we get excited about summer vacation.
During the summer, you may choose to do the activities on the attached calendar to help build your child's skills or for your child's enrichment. We hope you have a fun and safe summer break!
5th Grade Parents
Course verification sheets will be sent home on May 3, 2019. This is a list of the classes he/she is registered for middle school and is not his/her 6th grade schedule. Please only return if there are any corrections or changes that need to be made. If everything is correct, please keep it for your reference. You will be receiving more information about 6th grade orientation and your child's schedule from your child's middle school.
Credit-By-Exam
Students in grades K-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit-by-exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will only have one opportunity to test for each grade level considered.
To apply to take the test to skip kindergarten, a student must be 5 by September 1, and registered in a CFISD school. To apply to take the test to skip grade 1, a student must be 6 by September 1, and enrolled in a CFISD school.
Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No retests will be given.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact the school counselor before May 29, 2019.

Pre-Kindergarten
Our Pre-K students have enjoyed learning all about the butterfly cycle and even had the opportunity to see our caterpillars change into butterflies. We had a great time learning about plants and what they need in order to survive. In literacy, we will be learning to use sound to make words. In reading comprehension, we will be answering questions and thinking about what has happened in the story to make predictions. In math, we are counting to 30, using ordinal numbers, and learning basic shapes. We have had a lot of fun this year and it is so rewarding to see the growth that our Pre-k students have made. We hope you can make it to the End of Year Party to celebrate all of our hard work. We look forward to seeing you at Pre-K Awards on May 23. Thank you for all of your support this year!
Kindergarten
We have had so much fun in Kindergarten and are ready to move on to 1st grade. In reading, we are continuing to be avid nonfiction readers. We are inquiring about our “world book” and asking wonder questions, we are talking like an expert and using fancy words when we share with our reading partners. In writing, we are reviewing personal narratives. A personal narrative is a true story about you. As writers, we are still working on the conventions of writing such as having capital letters at the beginning of our sentence, spell our high frequency words correctly, and punctuation at the end of our sentences. In math, we are still reviewing the following math skills: identifying 2-D and 3-D shapes, addition and subtraction, identifying coins, measurement, counting to 100, more and fewer, making combinations up to 10, and counting forward and backward from 1 to 20. Please remember to send a healthy snack and water bottle with your child daily. Thank you!
First Grade
First grade will continue to work hard until the end of the school year.
In math will have our final District Math Test on May 8th and 9th. The students will continue to work on addition and subtraction with 3 addends. They will also begin the Stepping into 2nd grade unit which will review place value.
In reading we will conduct our End of Year testing May 6-22th. We will begin our unit on Favorite Authors. We will learn about their lives and similarities between books of the same author. Following fairy tales, we will start our Book Bag project where students will complete a book report on their favorite book. We will end our first grade year by making summer reading plans.
In writing we will conduct our End of Year testing on May 6-22th. We will begin writing based on student interest by implementing strategies learned throughout the school year.
Second Grade
In reading, we are beginning a new biography unit. Our students will discover, notice and be able to recognize characteristics of biographies. We will be learning about history, current events, and people throughout the reading of biographies. In writing, we are going to be writing poetry. We will focus on where to find ideas for poems and how to write poems. We will be learning how to write a poem using imagery, repetition and alliteration. In math, we are finishing multiplication and division. We are beginning to prepare for our last math review. In science, we are learning how changes in the environment affect the living things.
Third Grade
In math, we will finish reviewing and preparing for the Math STAAR test on May 13th. After the STAAR test, we will start to prepare for the students going to 4th grade by extending what we have learned this year.
In science, we will be finishing up our life cycle unit and begin to discuss careers in STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). We will also have our last DPM of the year on May 20th and May 21st. The DPM will cover everything we learned this year in science.
In Writing, we are working on Feature Articles. We will be researching and exploring questions we have about the world. After researching and drafting, we will take feature articles into a digital component for publishing.
In Reading, we will continue reviewing for the Reading STAAR test on May 14th. After the STAAR test, we will begin a new unit: Reading in the Digital Era. We will also be taking a look at Drama.
Fourth Grade
Mathematicians are reviewing the skills covered this year in preparation for our Math STAAR Test on Monday, May 13th. After STAAR, we are working on standard multiplication & division algorithms.
In Science, students are finishing their work with forces. Students will have an end of year DPM on Monday, May 20th & Tuesday, May 21st. This will cover all concepts that have been studied this year. Please encourage your child to review their light yellow study guide to help them prepare for the test.
Our Writers loved writing fiction stories, and they are excited to finish off the year with writing public service announcements. Students will explore persuasive writing techniques in mentor texts. Students will find an idea that is meaningful to them, research their topic, and create a PSA.
In Reading, we are reviewing the different genres we covered this year and some of the skills that will be assessed on STAAR. We take our Reading STAAR Test on Tuesday, May 14th. After STAAR, students are excited to start our exploration of graphic novels. Students are going to examine the structure, make inferences about character, and infer theme.

How is this our last 5th grade newsletter!? We are making the most of our last month with our kiddos and have some exciting things planned. From book clubs to boot camps, we have no doubt this will be a month to remember! In science, Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Robeau will be training their students at the 1st annual Science STAAR Boot Camp prepping for the Science STAAR on May 15th. Following their test, students will be engaging in several STEM challenges and in-class competitions. Mrs. Ramponi and Ms. Vogel are excited to introduce some 6th grade concepts to help prepare them for next year! In ELAR, students will be combining their reading and writing skills to prepare their comprehensive biography projects that they will present at the end of the month by becoming their subjects at our Living History Museum (May 24th)! Ms. Cockerill, Mrs. Leoni and Mrs. Smith will also be diving into memoir writing with students using past experiences as inspiration.
We will celebrate our kiddos with our favorite tradition, 5th Grade Day on Tuesday, May 28th at Gleason.
