Cedar Grove Friday Flash
February 7, 2020
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Last Friday was Around the World Night, which is always an amazing time to experience and celebrate our families from many different cultures. It was so nice to see the beautiful and colorful clothing, taste a variety of delicious foods, and learn more about the various countries represented. We thank all parents who participated in showcasing their country, the many volunteers that provided their time to prepare for the evening, and to Mrs. Hirschhorn for leading the fashion show. Special thanks to Lakshmi Venkataraman for chairing and organizing this fabulous event.
We also want to recognize our 5th grade students in advanced orchestra for their wonderful performance last night at their winter concert. Our students, together with students from Wilson Wims ES and Hallie Wells MS, did a great job sharing the music they have learned. Many thanks to Mr. Gillenwater, Instrumental Music teacher, for all his hard work in providing yet another enjoyable evening of music!
Have a great weekend!

The Montgomery County Council will host a pedestrian, bicycle, and traffic safety town hall meeting on Sunday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Wheaton High School, 12401 Dalewood Drive in Silver Spring, to hear directly from residents about the safety issues they are encountering on roadways and sidewalks and in crosswalks located in Montgomery County. Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart (Kids Heart Challenge) is Coming Soon!
On Tuesday, all students and staff will participate in a special assembly for our annual Kids Heart Challenge. Have you signed your child up for the Kids Heart Challenge yet? You can register at the link on our Web page! Just be sure you select Cedar Grove ES. Remember, if we get over 50% of the school registered, the school will get an extra $500 for PE equipment!
Kids Heart Challenge will begin the week of February 10-14 during your child’s P.E. class. Students in Grades K-5 are welcome to participate. The event is sponsored by the American Heart Association and all proceeds go to help in the fight and cure for heart disease. If parents/students choose to help, we ask for flat donations, and checks only (NO COINS or Dollars). We encourage everything to be done online. Everything is due by Friday, March 6th. We encourage students NOT to go door-to-door soliciting.
Science Expo/STEM Night Coming Soon!
We are excited once again to be hosting a non-competitive Science Expo/STEM Night on the evening of Wednesday, February 26, 2020 from 6:00-7:30 PM! If your child is participating in the Science Expo, a “participant information letter” (including the time that your child will be visited from a scientist) should have come home this week. Please stay tuned for the link to sign up for fun STEM activities in addition to the Science Expo! It will be made available on February 18th. If you have any questions, please contact your homeroom teacher. You may also contact: Patti Daly, Patricia_S_Daly@mcpsmd.org or Terrie Ward, Terrie_L_Ward@mcpsmd.org.
