Principal's Corner

It was a very exciting second week of school here at Saint Barnabas as all of our Grade 1 to 8 students received brand new Chrome-books for school use and our special subjects began! We extend a warm welcome to Ms. Loughran, our new music teacher, and Ms. Kenny, our new art teacher, to our Saint Barnabas community. At the same time, our PK students completed their first full week of full days of school! We have had lots of fun exploring our classroom, meeting new friends and playing outside in the yard and gym!


Some important notes as we head into Week 3 include:

1) It is imperative that all children arrive on time to school daily. Please be sure to reference the arrival map and logistics section of this newsletter for more information.


2) Hot lunch services for K-8 students will begin on Monday, September 19th. Directions regarding account set-up and a menu for the remainder of the month can be found below.


3) We are excited to share that over 300 members of our community have RSVP'ed to attend our Back to School BBQ on September 24th! Volunteer/ Donation Flyers for the event have been backpacked with all students and attached here. Please be sure to return the form by September 19th if you are able to either volunteer or donate to our first school year event. If you have any further questions about the event, please be sure to reach out to our HSA at hsa@stbarnabasschool.org


4) Our TACHS Prep course for pre-registered 7th and 8th graders will begin on Monday, September 19th. Please reference the welcome letter from Ms. Rozsas for more information about the course.


5) MAP testing for students in Grades K to 8 will begin on Monday, September 19th. Please see the attached letter and tentative schedule below.


5) Back to School Night, for parents and guardians only, will take place on Tuesday, September 20th! Start times have been referenced here:

PK to Grade 1: 5PM

Grade 2 to Grade 8: 6:15PM

All parents will use the school's main entrance to gather in the auditorium for a brief presentation prior to visiting their child's classroom and teacher.


Some important forms that have been linked below include:


  • Directions for account set-up for hot lunch services for K-8 students with HappyKid Lunch (service begins on September 19th)
  • Class of 2023 Ring Order Form
  • Outstanding Handbook/ School forms - this was due to the main office by September 12th.
  • Fall MAP Letter and Tentative Schedule (K-8 Parents Only)
  • Fall Club Flyer and Registration Flyer (Form and payment due by September 26th to ensure a place for your child in their chosen club!)


Please note that all outstanding forms should be returned to the main office as soon as possible.
Additionally, please find the 2022 Income Survey for all PK to Grade 8 families form in both English and Spanish that MUST be returned to the main office by September 23rd.

Logistics

School Map 2022 - 2023

A school map has been attached below. Please note the drop - off and pick - up locations for various school programs and grades.


Arrival Procedures

All students in Grades K to 8 will gather, in the L-Yard, at their assigned place (see map below) with their teacher in the morning, no later than 8AM. It is imperative that all students arrive on time daily to school. The school day begins at 8AM with morning prayer and announcements to follow at 8:10AM.

*In the case of inclement weather, students will use the side school door, nearest the L-yard, to enter our school auditorium for morning arrival.


Dismissal Procedures

Students in Grades K - 2 will dismiss at 2:55PM at the L-yard entrance followed by Grades 3-5 at the same time at the 241st Street door. Grades 6-8 will follow with dismissal at 3:00PM at the L-yard entrance. Students not picked up within 5 minutes of their dismissal times will report to after-school and fees will be incurred. Students attending after-school will report to their designated rooms.


Building Access

Our building is staffed with a full-time security guard from 8AM to 4PM. If you need anything from the school between those hours, please call Ms. Linda in the main office at 718-324-1088 or use the main entrance of the school.

Morning Care/ After School Procedures and Registration

Morning care and after school began on Monday, September 12th for pre-registered families only.


Morning Care Students may be dropped off as early as 7:20AM to the side school door opposite the L-yard. Please look for the door labeled 'Morning Care'.


After School Students
in Grades K-8 must be picked up by 5:45PM at the cafeteria door on 241st street. Enter the gate and down the stairs. The door will be labeled 'After School Pick-Up'. Children in PK enrolled in after school must be picked up by 5:45PM as well, however, the pick-up door is located at our school auditorium doors on Saint Barnabas Place.



For any parents who are attempting to reach the After School program after 3PM, you may reach them by calling 718-324-1088 and using extension 6.

Early Childhood at SBES

Arrival and Dismissal Logistics

PK3 students and parents should enter through our school auditorium doors located on Saint Barnabas Place. PK3 parents may choose to walk their children to their classroom daily. As a reminder, the doors will remain open from 8AM to 8:15AM. Parents who arrive after 8:15AM must use our main office doors.

PK3 parents should meet their children at these same doors for dismissal. Your child's teacher and their aides will bring them to the door.


PK4 students should enter through our gym doors located on Saint Barnabas Place. Parents will drop their children at the door where teachers and assistants will be located. As a reminder, the doors will remain open from 8AM to 8:15AM. They will guide your child to their appropriate class. Parents who arrive after 8:15AM must use our main office doors. Parents should utilize the morning drop off doors on Saint Barnabas Place for dismissal.

Monthly Newsletter

Every month, your child's teacher will provide a newsletter to you via email, hardcopy, and this newsletter. The newsletter will contain important information about the current unit of study for the month, calendar dates, contact information and will even provide ideas and opportunities for enrichment at home with your child. Please be sure to reference your child's class specific SeeSaw account for important updates and reminders that are sent daily and weekly. If you need any further help accessing your child's SeeSaw classroom, please reach out to your child's teacher as soon as possible.

Tuition

Tuition payments for the 2022 - 2023 school year began this month. At this time, all registered parents should have received an email from SmartTuition regarding their tuition schedule. If you have not received this email, please let me know as soon as possible.


As a reminder, if you have chosen to unenroll your child for the upcoming school year, all withdrawal notices must have been received by August 15th to have all tuition obligations cleared for the 22-23 school year.

Parent Referral Incentive

The following credit will be applied to the referring Parent’s 2022-23 Smart Tuition account and will appear on the family’s February billing statement:

· A one-time tuition credit of $250 for each new family registered in Full-Day Pre-K 3 or 4 (not UPK) and Grades K-8, for any referring Parent whose outreach and referral efforts result in a new family registering their child(ren) at any Regional School in the Archdiocese of New York in Full-Day Pre-K 3 or 4 (not UPK) and Grades K-8 for the 2021-22 school year and remaining in good standing with the school through February 1, 2023.


Program Conditions:


· The referring Parent must:


  • Refer the prospective family to the school for a virtual meeting with the school principal, or his/her designee, and
  • Complete and sign this referral form on or before the time of the virtual meeting with the principal to initiate the referral process. Referral forms received after the virtual meeting will not be accepted.
  • The prospective family must be NEW to the school in Grades K-8, OR have a student enrolled on a full time basis in a Pre K (non UPK) program; returning families are not covered by this Program.
  • The referral credit for the referring Parent will be applied to their tuition bill in time for the February billing statement provided that:
  • The new family’s child has continued to be enrolled in the school through February 1, 2023, and
  • The referring family has remained current on their tuition payments.

Uniforms

All uniforms must be purchased from Liebman's Uniforms in New Rochelle. Please click here to order uniforms online and to view uniform requirements. Please note there is a newly designed uniform for Pre-K and Kindergarten. (Uniforms are optional for Pre-K students) Grades 1 - 8 will have both a Fall and Spring uniform to choose from along with some new options (shorts and polos!)


Please reach out to Ms. Linda in the main office if you would like to purchase items from our Gently Used Uniform Sale. The building is open from Monday through Friday from 8AM to 3PM.

K-8 Lunch Service

We are excited to announce that we will be able to provide in-house lot lunch services via HappyKid Lunch for the 2022 - 2023 school year starting on September 19, 2022! Please see the attached letter below on how to sign up and to view the monthly lunch menu.

Physicals and Immunizations

As a reminder, every student must have an updated physical on file each school year. ALL students must have up-to-date immunization records and a physical exam form completed each school year. For convenience, all forms are linked below. Please note that all NYC Pre-K students, under the age of 5 by December 31, 2022, will need to have a current flu vaccine on file. For those students that require an inhaler, or other medications such as an epipen, to be administered in school, I have linked the medical administration forms.

TACHS

This year’s TACHS Test will once again be an online, at-home, remote test which will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022. Students will be required to have a device that is equipped with a webcam and is compatible with Chrome browser along with access to the internet. For security purposes, upon registration parents will be notified that their child will be recorded during the test and asked to sign or check an agreement. At the end of the test, flagged recordings will be reviewed by a trained proctor for any suspicious activity. Please be advised that the test will not be available for iPads and/or cell phones.


Registration will open on Monday, August 22nd and run through Thursday, October 27th until 11:59PM.

High School Open House Opportunities

News from the Church

FAREWELL TO FR. JOSEPH AKUNAEZIRI

Fr. Joseph has received a new assignment. Effective, September 1st, he will become Administrator of Our Lady of Victory and Sacred Heart Parish in Mount Vernon. He will be very much missed here at Saint Barnabas. Fr. Joseph will return to celebrate his farewell Mass on Sunday, September 18th at 1:00pm. Following Mass we will offer a light reception where you all will get the opportunity to say your goodbyes.


Bronx County Ancient Order of Hibernians Irish Language Mass

Please join us on Saturday, September 17th at 2:30pm in the Main Church by honoring those who keep our Irish heritage and language alive followed by the Installation of County Officers.
