TRIBUTE TO MRS. JOEY TAYLOR
Joey Taylor, beloved Linwood Howe teacher and colleague for 26 years, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Taylor was a long-time Kindergarten teacher at Linwood E. Howe Elementary School. She is remembered for her endearing approach to her students and their families.
Mrs. Taylor taught her students the importance of being a person of integrity. She embraced and modeled respect for people from all walks of life and inspired those around her to do the same.
Joey Taylor was the embodiment of Mother Earth. Her aura was larger than life. She had a special gift for making you feel like you were the most important person in the room. Her welcoming smile, laugh, hugs, compassion, intelligence, and creativity are some of the beautiful attributes that made her so adored. Mrs. Taylor loved literature, art, and music and strove to instill that passion in her students.
If you would like to contribute towards the purchase of a bench to be placed on the Linwood Howe grounds in Mrs. Taylor’s honor, please mail your contribution to Lin Howe PTA c/o Mrs. Taylors' bench

Culver City Unified School District Board of Trustees Approves Resolution to Put
An Educational Facilities Bond on the March 5, 2024, Ballot in a 5-0 Vote
Proposed bond will generate $358 million
Culver City, CA – At a special meeting held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, the Culver City Unified School District (CCUSD) Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to put an Educational Facilities Bond on the March 5, 2024, ballot. Trustees were united and enthusiastic following a period of public comment, a presentation, and a short discussion among the Board members.
Most CCUSD school sites date back to the 1950's and have not had significant renovations in decades.
Some of the issues are: crumbling ceiling tiles that are falling down, leaky roofs and plumbing, outdated wiring and deteriorated walls, doors, windows and restrooms all must be replaced or fixed. Outdated, inefficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning units are costly to maintain and contribute to poor air quality.
As Interim Superintendent Maria Martinez-Poulin explained, “State government provides no dedicated funding for local school facilities. The proposed bond will generate $358 million in locally-controlled funding to fix and upgrade local schools. None of these funds can be taken by the State.”
If approved by 55% of local voters in the upcoming March Primary election, the bond measure would:
● Fix leaky roofs, falling ceiling tiles, and aging, deteriorated wiring, plumbing and drainage
● Update science labs, libraries, and instructional technology to catch up with the rapidly changing
demands of our modern world and support student achievement
● Improve fire safety, emergency communications, and school security
● Modernize our aging neighborhood schools, which support everyone’s property values
“I’ve heard loud and clear that our community wants to ensure that all students have the opportunity to receive an excellent education in safe, modern classrooms and schools,” said Dr. Martinez-Poulin. “Now, it’s up to the voters to decide whether our local schools will receive funding for these urgent repairs that the State won’t provide.”
The CCUSD bond measure includes specific fiscal accountability provisions:
● By law, all funds remain under local control and may only support CCUSD schools
● Independent citizen oversight and public reports of all spending are required
● Funded by a levy limited to 6 cents per $100 of assessed (not market) property value (assessed
value can be much lower than market value for those who have owned their homes a long time)
● CCUSD currently has the third lowest tax rate for school facility funding in LA County
● No funds may be taken by the State.

November/December Vocal Music note for Parent Newsletter
TK/K/1/2 Vocal Music
Happy December! We have been having so much fun singing our winter-themed songs in our vocal music class. In music class during November and December, all TK/K/1/2 students have been practicing their awesome turkey moves with our song "Hey, Tommy Turkey." Many students have already brought home an "Ask Me" sheet for Tommy Turkey as well as a Tommy Turkey map--ask your student to sing you this song and show you their creative turkey strut.
If your student is in TK or Kindergarten, we have been learning about and dancing to Trepak, the Russian dance from Peter Tchaikovsky's ballet, "The Nutcracker." Ask your student to tell you about the story of the Nutcracker, and to show you the jumps in their ballet dance! We also have been singing the song "Up Above My Head." What can you have above your head in the song? Look for the "Ask Me" sheet that was sent home this past week with these fun songs!
If your student is in 1st grade, we have been learning about and dancing to the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from Peter Tchaikovsky's ballet, "The Nutcracker." Ask your student to tell you about the story of the Nutcracker, and to show you their magical scarf dance! In November, to honor Native American Heritage month, we learned the song "He he wanna wawate," a Dakota song. We also read the book "We Are Water Protectors," to learn more about the Dakota people and their present-day activism. Look for the "Ask Me" sheet that has lyrics to all of these songs.
If your student is in 2nd grade, we have also been learning about and dancing to the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from Peter Tchaikovsky's ballet, "The Nutcracker." Ask your student to tell you about the story of the Nutcracker, and to show you their magical scarf dance! Additionally, we have started learning the round Shalom Chaverim, in Hebrew, to practice singing two parts at the same time in music class.
If you have any questions about the vocal music program, feel free to reach out directly to Ms. Koplinka-Loehr at: daniellekoplinkaloehr@ccusd.org
We hope you are having fun listening to your students' wonderful singing voices!Youth Basketball Clinic
