Picture Day is Wednesday, October 2

Bring your Smile! Mize will be having PICTURE DAY on

Thursday, October 2nd.

The De Soto School District has been an important and strong participant in the Kansas Teacher of the Year Program for many years. De Soto has had fourteen state finalists and twelve semi-finalists represented in the program since 2000. Two of our very own teachers were chosen as The Kansas Teacher of the Year; Keil Hileman in 2004 and Jeri Powers in 2008. This is truly unprecedented! Matt Bradford (DHS) and Emily Valdez (SE) will be representing our district in the 2020 Kansas Teacher of the Year program. The 2020 Kansas Teacher of the Year will be announced in November in Wichita.

We would like for you to nominate any teacher whom you consider to be an outstanding and effective educator and whom you or your child has had as a teacher. This person must be a tenured employee of USD 232. If there is a De Soto educator whom you believe to be outstanding and deserving of special recognition, please fill out the form below. This form needs to be returned to your building principal by noon on October 4, 2019.

NEW-->Delayed Start on Wednesday, Sept. 18 and Wednesday, Nov. 6

The district is conducting a delayed start to help prepare our schools should a delayed start be necessary due to inclement weather. This will allow the district to consider the logistics involved in postponing the start of the school day and help prepare families should this action occur.

The district is testing this plan based on the number of school closures caused by inclement weather during the last school year. The school day will end at its regular time on September 18 and November 6. Families are encouraged to make plans now to accommodate these scheduled delayed starts.

**For more information about the delayed start and calendar information visit: http://bit.ly/2M9zCnV

**Students will still have Specials on late start days**

-->Mize doors will open at 10:30 and 10:35, at first bell- they may go to their classroom.<--

Bus Stops on the Delayed Start Days:

First Student busing pick up times on Wednesday, Sept.18 will shift two hours. For example, if the original time for pick up is at 7:05 a.m., then the new pick up time would be 9:05 a.m. on Wednesday.

My name is Mrs. Leuszler and I am your Mize Elementary Technology Integration teacher. Stop in during conferences to see what we have been up to!

Kindergarten-2nd Grades

We learned about iPad care and what all the buttons and openings are such as where to plug headphones in. Then we took pictures in the camera app and went over how to turn the camera around, see the pictures, go back and take more, etc. We made an “All About Me” collage in Pic EDU. This app is very useful in the classroom and it can be used to show what they are working on in class, show the steps of how to do something, and in many other ways! Kindergarten has also been working on review games with their letters and numbers and their teacher can see their progress. 1st and 2nd grades also wrote and recorded stories in the “Draw and Tell” app. Your student can show you during conferences and we can also AirDrop it to you if you’d like!

3rd-5th Grades

We logged into the Macs and took pictures in PhotoBooth. I started going over the difference between Microsoft applications and Google applications and we went to their Google Drives and made an “All About Me” Doc. We also covered the “Sharing” of Google Docs and Slides so they’ll be able to collaborate on projects in class! Next up: researching online.

Art Room Reminder

There are days that we do get messy in the art room. It is strongly suggested to wear play clothes on days that your child has art. We don’t supply paint shirts. If you would like to have your child wear a paint shirt, please supply them with a shirt and they can keep it in their locker until art day. If you have any further questions, please contact Mrs. Souders at ssouders@usd232.org.

Nurse Notes

Immunizations, all students must be current on their vaccinations by October 14th, 2019 or they will be excluded from school on that date. Letters were sent home and a second reminder will be mailed stating which vaccination(s) are missing. Please provide proof of vaccination by providing one of the following;

· A statement from your health care provider with the day, month, and year that your child received the vaccination (s),

· A statement signed by your doctor indicating a medical exemption or delayed schedule, or

· A statement of religious exemption signed by a legal guardian.

On August 2nd the state of KS passed a new law requiring all Kindergarten and 1st grade students to have two Hepatitis A Vaccinations. If your child had two Hepatitis A vaccinations and you still received a letter, your child likely received the 2nd vaccine too early for it to be considered valid by the state of Kansas. This will require your child to receive a 3rd dose of the vaccination to be compliant. If you have older children that have not had their 1st or 2nd Hepatitis A vaccination, it’s a good idea to get them caught because the state will be expanding the requirement to older children next year.

If your child suffers seasonal allergies please be sure to medicate them prior to the start of the school day. The health room only stocks allergy medication for use in emergency situations. We are happy to keep over-the-counter medications from home in our office; please include a note from home giving us permission to give the medication, and send the medication in its original packaging with the medication’s dosing instructions.

Looking forward to a great school year!

National School Lunch Week..10/14-10/18

The week of October 14th – 18th is National School Lunch Week!

To celebrate we will have Eat Your Colors Week.

The National School Lunch Program serves more than 30 million students every school day across our nation. President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week in 1962 to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom. To celebrate, we will have “Eat Your Colors” Week in the lunchroom! Each day has an assigned color that will be featured through various food items. Please have your student(s) help us celebrate by dressing in the color of the day!

Monday, October 14th – No School

Tuesday, October 15th – Red Day

Wednesday, October 16th – Yellow Day

Thursday, October 17th – Orange Day

Friday, October 18th – Rainbow Day

It will be a fun-filled, colorful week!
