Viper Voice
Week 1
Sierra Verde Leads with Kindness
It was an amazing week to have our amazing Vipers back on campus for three action packed days of learning and community building. We hope your kids come home excited for what we have in store for the year and exhausted from all the learning and innovating that is already underway. We thank you all for your patience and help in keeping our kids safe at arrival and dismissal as we take the time to teach our procedures to all our new families.
We have amazing events and activities happening each week and we encourage all of you to follow our facebook page, twitter feed, and make sure you join our PTSO and follow their page as well. This will allow you to stay connected and see what is taking place on campus across all our grades.
As we start our first full week of school next week, we are excited to be able to begin welcoming our parents/guardians back to help volunteer and visit at SV. We are now allowing visitors back to eat lunch with your child in the MPR and will soon have volunteers back in classrooms as we get our classroom procedures setup and in place. If you are coming to eat lunch with your student we ask that you arrive on time, and bring lunch only for your student, we cannot have lunches passed out to other students or friends in the MPR. We also require all parents to follow our school rules and dress code on campus and do not use any cell phones or tablets in the MPR or around our students. Mrs. Olofson will soon have a list of volunteer training dates that are mandatory for all adults on campus.

Mr. Lynch created band posters with classes that will stay up all year. On these posters they have set goals, described what band means to them and added their own personal touches!
Welcome Mrs. Hatfield to Our 2nd Grade Team
Hello fellow Vipers!
My name is Jen Hatfield and I am excited to join Sierra Verde’s second grade team! This is my 18th year teaching in the classroom. I have taught Kindergarten and second grade in both Dear Valley Unified and Pendergast school districts. I am passionate about instilling a love of learning and confidence in each of my students as well as motivating them to grow academically and emotionally.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University (Go Lumberjacks!), worked 2 years as a mentor teacher through the Teacher Advancement Program (TAP) at Constitution Elementary, and have tutored from my home for the past 25+ years.
On a personal note, I have been married to my wonderful husband and best friend Bob for 28 years this November. Together we have raised three wonderful sons and this past June welcomed our beautiful daughter-in-law Bre into our family. This year Jake (Bre) will turn 25, Cason 23, and Nathan will be 20. We are all Arizona natives and enjoy traveling together visiting places like Flagstaff, Sedona, and California.
I am looking forward to starting my new journey here with you at Sierra Verde!

22-23 Sierra Verde Handbook and Policies
Below you will find our Back to School Checklist of policies and procedures. In the document our SV Student Handbook and DVUSD Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook are linked for your review. We ask that you print the 1st page and sign it, and return it to your child's homeroom teacher or you can drop it in the office or outside our office in our after hours drop box. We have hard copies available in the office for anyone who does not have a printer or needs a hard copy. These forms are due back by August 19.
PBIS Rewards is Back!
Our PBIS store will be open starting on August 8th! Students can use their points earned for being safe, responsible, respectful and kind to purchase fun items. These items are delivered on Fridays. If you are interested in tracking your student through our PBIS Rewards app, download the PBIS Rewards for Family app and ask your child's teacher for their unique QR code.
If you are interested in donating to our PBIS store, we have a PBIS Store Amazon wishlist. You can also drop off any donation items to our office - new/gently loved stuffed animals are always a popular item.
1. We need parent volunteers to help keep inventory and package PBIS rewards for students.
2. The store needs rewards! There are many ways to donate – new and gently used toys, party favors – anything that kids would be excited to receive!
3. Help stock the PBIS Store Rewards Store by purchasing Rewards directly on Amazon. If you purchase from our PBIS Rewards wishlist it will ship directly to campus and our kids can purchase immediately. Stock our store here:

If you have are available to donate your time or have questions about our PBIS program, please contact Mrs. Brittany Hughes or Mrs. Stephanie Hoffpauir in the front office.

New Year, New Gear
Mindfulness Mondays
Next week we have our first "Mindfulness Monday" of the year. Each week we will have a mindfulness focus and we invite all our community to take on the challenge of the week.
Being mindful of how we breathe can be powerful. Our goal this week is to simply focus your attention on your breathing - to its natural rhythm and flow and the way it feels on each inhale and exhale. Focusing on your breathing can be helpful because it serves as anchor - something you can turn your attention to at any time if you start to feel stressed or carried away by negative emotions. Take time through the week to notice your breath. How are you breathing? Are you holding your breath? Can you feel your stomach moving? Can you hear your breath coming out of your nose?
Challenge: Notice and acknowledge your breath. After announcements everyday this week, take 3 deep breaths - 4 count in, 4 count hold, 4 count out.
Office Updates
- When coming to the office to sign out your student, please have your Driver's License/ID ready, and as a reminder that we can only check out students to their legal guardians or an adult listed on their emergency contact "pink" card.
- Please make sure to update any custodial or parenting agreements with Mrs. Bennett so that we have all current paperwork on file.
- If you have moved in the past year, please also make sure to update your new address in PowerSchool.
- As a reminder we are not accepting any outside food or drink to classrooms this year, all birthday buckets must be purchased through Mrs. Jasperson
- If you bring your student's lunch to the front office, we have a late lunch table in the cafeteria that all student's will be able to check. Just put their name on their lunch bag and it will be delivered to the cafeteria.
- If you are calling in your student as absent, please call the attendance line directly so you can leave a message. Our absence line is 623-376-4890
- Optional Chromebook protection plans are available until the 3rd week of school, you can read about the options and purchase the plan online through our payment portal.
Drop Off & Pick Up Reminders
- Make sure that all adults who will be picking up students at 3:30 have a purple placard with the student's Last Name and Grade clearly written in marker bold and big so we can read them. Placards are available in the office and will be available on Monday at MYT Night. Take as many copies as you need (one for mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, etc......).
- Our Front Loop opens at 3:20 pm for Purple Placards, if you come early, we will push you out of the loop to make room for our Kindergarten dismissal
- Please pull forward and follow all staff directions around the pick up loop, don't stop short, and stay in your car.
- We will load you kids, if they need help buckling, pull up and around the loop to the buckle zone past our bike rack
- We do not have any supervision of students until 8:30 am so please do not drop off or leave any kids unattended before 8:30 am.
- Please be patient and be kind to staff and other drivers as it takes a few weeks for all to learn our procedures. Remember out staff is out in 100+ degree weather keeping all our kids safe, and everyone's safety is more important than any individual's convenience
- Please also note that we have construction going on at the corner of arrowhead loop and rose garden and the city of Glendale has restricted foot traffic in the park and built a temporary sidewalk. We have no control over this area and are not able to supervise or monitor this city owned property. We ask that you remind your kids to walk their bikes and scooters along the path and that they do not cut across the park and over the temporary fence.
- If you do not have a kindergarten student, you must use the front loop for morning drop-off. We do not have enough spaces for additional vehicles, and our front loop is much more efficient and safe for our 1st-8th graders.
- Do not cross any streets outside of the designated and manned crosswalks in the am or pm. We have had some very close calls and pedestrians almost struck crossing rose garden illegally.

Food and Nutrition
Sierra Verde is still currently looking for a full-time nurse, and until we are able to hire a full-time nurse, we will not be allowing outside food or drink for any reason on campus. DVUSD has a birthday bucket order form that will be the only method of birthday treats for 22-23. You can fill out an application for a birthday bucket and work with our Cafeteria Manger Mrs. Debbie Jasperson to arrange these birthday treats. The Birthday Bucket application is on our homepage and is linked below as well.
In order to keep meal account balances topped off, you can put money on the student account with cash or check at Meet Your Teacher night in the MPR, drop off cash or check in the office, or use E-Z school pay which is free through September 7th. EZ School pay also has an app available to download and track your balance.
