NEWS FROM DR. CHAUSSEE
Support for Our Staff
Last summer I was breathing a sigh of relief as Covid numbers were falling and the opening of the school year seemed so much more relaxing than last year. As we soon found out, that was not to be. The staff burdens were not lightened.
This school year we’ve had to deal with substitute teacher shortages, unpredictable Covid cases, mask wearing in the classrooms on a short notice, and students who came to school having experienced about 20 months of a disrupted school year and an unknown impact on the children as well as adults. What learning gaps exist because of this disruption? What emotional support is needed for children that missed months of school last year and now have returned? Were children in unhealthy situations that the school was unaware of due to limited contact?
Our staff which includes our support staff need support from parents and others. We have an excellent dedicated staff that I hope will be here for many years to come. I take pride in working hard to hire an excellent staff.
What can parents do to show support? A note of appreciation goes a long way. Watching for symptoms and keeping kids at home if showing symptoms so we don’t put others at risk and prolong the mask wearing. If a parent knows someone who can qualify as a substitute teacher, have them contact the school or the district. As a parent and grandparent, I can’t think of many other jobs that are so vital to the future of our country. I want an excellent staff member in every classroom.
Despite these daily hardships, our staff has persevered through it. Our MAP and NSCAS (state tests) are high. They have maintained an upbeat attitude and come to work every day with a smile.
