Message from Ms. Biordi
Winter Fest was such a blast! Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the family fun night a terrific evening for the Sargent community to connect and be together. The applications for the Sargent STEAM Fair were distributed last week and are due on February 3rd. Dr. Landahl re-scheduled Sargent's community conversation to February 8th beginning at 7:00pm. At this meeting, Dr. Landahl will explain the budget process, the strategic plan and the upcoming capital improvement projects. Report cards are going home with students on February 3rd. Enclosed with the report card will be the results from your student's most recent iReady assessment in ELA and Math. Our beloved security guard, Mr. Landisi, is retiring at the end of this week. February "Book of the Month" 📚
As we approach Black History Month, the Sargent Equity Team is picking back up with our monthly "Book of the Month" highlights! The February theme is "Celebrating Black History!" Each month we teach a common theme across grade levels and align the theme with some building wide events. Each class uses different mentor texts during morning meeting to introduce the themes and prompt meaningful discussions. During the month of February, the book of the month mentor texts will be one of the many activities student will participate to recognize achievements of African Americans in our country's history.
⭐ Scenes From Our School ⭐
Ice Skating in Music Class!
Pre-K was ice skating all around the music room last week! Mrs. Stickney got them up and moving for an activity around long and short sounds!
Spreading Kindness
Student Council put together this beautiful kindness tree with notes written by the student body. Thank you StuCo for spreading kindness all around SES!
Winter Clean Up
Our Environmental Club took action and cleaned up trash from the school campus. They gave some plastic a second life by re-using bags instead of adding to waste by using new trash bags.
Is that a lemur?
The Two by Two Zoo visited SES last week and it was so much fun! Students received a great message about kindness and conservation.
Student Leaders
Each month at PTO meetings representatives from the Student Leadership Team present a "student report." Thanks to Audrey and Maram for doing such a great job last month and to Addy and Nathan, last month's presenters.
Chinese New Year
Happy Lunar New Year! This year is the year of the rabbit and many classes learned about the Chinese tradition and celebrated this week!
Elementary Art Show
Congratulations to the Sargent students who were selected to have their artwork displayed at the Howland Library for the 2023 Art Show! Elysia Beauchamp, Preston Angot, Valentina Winkelmann, Gus Greenburg, David Verdesi, Mason Soltish, Gianna Cruz, Letty Campbell, Brynn Harvey and Sophia Cruz. We are so proud of your achievement!
New! Digital Attendance Notes
Did you know that you can now submit a digital attendance note when your child is absent? New York State law requires schools to have a note from a parent/guardian on file any time their student misses school for any reason. To make this process more convenient, there is now a button on the Sargent Elementary School website for parents/guardians to fill out a google form in lieu of sending in a hard copy note. An "old school" pen and paper note or an email to calvertcason.m@beaconk12.org still will get the job done but feel free to give this third option a try the next time your student has to miss a day of school.
Your student being present in school is very important to us. Remember, the only NYS recognized reasons for a "legal" school absence are:
- Sickness of the student
- Religious observation
- Required court appearance
- Death in the family
- Impassable roads due to weather
- Approved school sponsored trips
- Quarantine
- Medical/dental appointments
Good Luck in Retirement Mr. Landisi!
Our beloved security guard, Mr. Jerry Landisi, is retiring from the Beacon City School District on January 27th. Mr. Landisi has done an amazing job in keeping the building safe and forming relationships with students, staff, families and faculty alike. Mr. Landisi brought a great sense of humor, pride and dedication to his position at Sargent. Working for the Beacon City School District is just a small chapter in Mr. Landisi's storied career. His prior experience as a corrections officer, Dutchess County legislator and Navy aircraft mechanic lent itself to the many hats he wore at Sargent. The entire Sargent community wishes Mr. Landisi lots of luck in this next chapter!
