Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School
October 3-7, 2016
We've completed our first grading period. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, October 7th.
There are many events I enjoy attending that showcase our student body. This past Tuesday evening was one of my favorites: the talent show. Amy McFarlane, Theater Arts Director, advertises, organizes, and puts on this event every year. It is so refreshing to see such a large number of students participate! We had 21 acts perform! Thanks to Ms. McFarlane, these talented students were provided an opportunity to express their passion. You have some talented children! Thank you for sharing them with us.
Last week we had 24 students participate in a day long peer mediation training by the Bexar County Dispute Resolution Center. The students went through the process of learning how to mediate small conflicts between peers. They were beyond amazing! It is evident why they were selected for this role. Their leadership role on campus is to assist fellow students resolve small conflicts among their peers. These are excellent life skills they are learning and practicing. Thanks to Julie Minnis, 7th grade counselor, and Angela Ross, 8th grade counselor, for arranging this wonderful opportunity for our student body.
On Saturday, Mrs. Minnis, took 11 students to Krueger Middle School for an Anti-Bullying Symposium. These students will share the knowledge they gained with other students. (Picture below.) We are fortunate to have such dedicated counselors at our school! Red Ribbon Week is October 24-28 and they have planned quite a few activities for the students. (Flyer below.)
Our picture retake day is scheduled for October 14, 2016. We're looking for some parent volunteers that can help the photographers with the students who need to retake their photos.

If your child is anything like mine, you don't get a lot of information about school! "How was your day?" "Fine." "What did you learn"? "Just some stuff." I discovered some questions that have helped with that conversation. I've included them below. I hope you use them in your daily conversation about school!
We had our first School Advisory Team (SAT) meeting this past week. I would like to thank the parents that volunteered to serve on this committee. I appreciate your input and involvement in our school. Together we can achieve so much more!
