A Message from Our Principal
Students, at the end of this week the school year will be officially 1/4th of the way complete. Regardless of where you are at in terms of academic progress there is still time to improve. The end of the grading period is a great time to reflect on what worked for you and what did not. The main thing I hope we can all agree on is that we all have the ability to improve. I encourage each and every one of you to never be satisfied. Never settle for good enough. Always find something that you can improve on. Be your biggest critic. At the end of the day the only thing that we can control 100% of the time is our effort and how we respond to situations.
On October 14, report cards will be available on PowerSchool for parents and students to view. Report cards are the main way that we have always viewed student success, but I sometimes question if it is the best way to determine growth of a student. My goal for every student is for them to grow academically and socially. Middle school is a time where the classroom rigor and responsibility increases. Sometimes it is hard to see true growth by looking at a sheet of paper with a letter grade.
When we return from fall break we will begin our second round of IXL diagnostics. This will provide us with a true picture of how much we have grown from the beginning of the school year until now. Please encourage your child to put forth their best effort on this diagnostic. This not only tells us how we have improved, it also guides teachers to provide your student with the type of instruction they need based on their current achievement level. This test, like the ACAP, gives you a true picture of how your child compares to students across the state in various subject areas. It provides an early snapshot of how students will perform in higher stakes tests such as ACT. These tests require stamina and higher order thinking. It helps the whole learning team reflect on if students will be able to apply classroom knowledge outside of the school setting.
