Monthly Events Of Wildcats: May 2021

Principals Message

Hello Wildcat families!

The 20-21 school year has been a year like no other (and I hope to keep it that way). The Teachers and Staff at TEWMS have made phone calls, sent emails, posted remind message, held zoom meetings, adjusted assignments and time lines. They have collaborated, problem solved and made necessary changes all because they care about each one of our students and families. They have done all this while they themselves have been living through the pandemic and COVID-19. The week of May 3rd is Teacher and Staff appreciation at TEWMS. Please consider recognizing a teacher or staff member for their hard work and dedication to the success of Thomas E. Weightman Middle School. Click here to give a shout out for a Wildcat.

For any Wildcats who has a laptop, iPad, hotspot (or any other device, including the charger & cords) signed out from the TEWMS, it will need to be returned on May 27th between the hours of 7:30am & 4pm OR on May 28th between the hours of 7:30am-12pm. All devices MUST be returned no later than 12pm on May 28th. Devices can be dropped off at the front office.

Families are using the self-screener and contacting the school when your student isn't feeling well and keeping them home. Many of you are taking advantage of the district COVID testing sites that are set up just for Pasco County students.

•Students should bring pencils, face covering, bottle water with them.

•MSOL students need to be dropped off by the gym between 7:50 - 8:10am each morning that they are testing. Please not drop your child off prior to 7:50 as there will not be supervision. Students who need additional time after 160 minutes may continue working; however, testing must be completed within the same school day. *MSOL students should speak with their Civics teacher to determine their specific test date.

We have had some families contact us regarding "opting-out" of state assessments. Please know that per Florida Statute 1008.22, as a Florida public school, we are required/mandated to administer statewide assessments to our students and all students in specified grade levels/courses are required to participate in State testing. As such, it is our obligation to use due diligence to comply with this requirement. Therefore, all students present and on campus on any testing or makeup testing days will be required to sit for the assessment. Florida has no opt-out policy for state assessments. The test results provide parents, students, and teachers information about student performance. Teachers use this data to provide targeted instruction and supports to students. The school and district use the results to help target resources and supports. 1008.22 Student assessment program for public schools.

Communication from Superintendent Browning:

We all agree that we would like to discontinue the requirement for wearing masks or face coverings as soon as possible. However, in Pasco County Schools we are following the CDC guidance that continues to recommend the “correct use of masks” as a prevention strategy in schools.

School Board Policy 8450.01 gives the Superintendent the authority to require masks or face coverings due to the “immediate and continued danger of the spread of COVID-19.” That rule expires “no later than the conclusion of the 2020-2021 school year.” So, there is no rule in place to authorize the use of masks at the start of next school year, and we are optimistic – and we expect – that in the fall it will no longer be necessary to require masks or face coverings.

At this time, there is no change to our school district’s mask requirement, which has been in place all school year. We urge everyone to please be patient and to continue to exercise basic prevention strategies so we can put masks and COVID-19 behind us.
