Welcome Back!
- Students Grades 1-12 return to school Tuesday September 4, 2018.
- Kindergarten Students start school Thursday September 6, 2018
Thank you, CHUM, for making it possible to give out over 1,100 backpacks with school supplies to local children! And to our local media for spreading the word, much appreciated. Since 2002, this program has provided over 9,100 backpacks to families in Duluth. Thank you to all who donated to help meet this need!
Families can apply anywhere, anytime - the process is safe, secure, convenient and available 24/7. Data is transmitted to your local school district office the same day you apply, allowing for quicker processing. Families qualifying for free/reduced school meals may also qualify for reduced school activity fees.
Inspiring Words - Thank You, Principal EL
“Every child needs someone to be crazy about them.”
These are the words of Salome Thomas-EL, an award-winning teacher, principal and nationally recognized educator.
EL spoke with Duluth Public School employees during a Staff Development day held at Denfeld High School this week.
EL says these words shape his life-long commitment to answering the question, “How do we ensure that every child achieves their greatest potential?”
For over 20 years, Principal EL has taken on this challenge with the absolute belief that every child can and will learn as long as adults in their world care enough to not give up. Starting as a teacher and chess coach and through his years as principal, Thomas-EL has transformed the attitudes and strategies of school staff, parents, and members of the community to help hundreds of troubled children not only graduate from high school but go on to earn higher degrees from major colleges and universities.
Happy New Year!
The new school year means new opportunities for Duluth Public School employees to expand their knowledge. Hundreds of people from every department and area of expertise gathered at Denfeld High School this week for Staff Development Day. They heard from nationally recognized educator Salome Thomas-EL, Duluth Police Chief Mike Tusken, learned about new safety procedures like ALICE and more.
Wishing everyone a great school year, click here to see photos from the event.
This week we held a teacher induction for 60+ new teachers. Sharing information about the importance of relationships, working towards our goals of kindergarten readiness, reading well by grade 3, closing the achievement gap, all students graduating on time, college and career ready. Glad to have you on board!
