Martell Monitor

Volume 1: Week 11 November 2, 2018

Dear Martell Families,

Dear Families,

It was a great week at Martell! The week began with Trunk or Treats. It was a record turnout! Thank you to our chairs: Tonya Caswell and Kristy Osterlund and to all those that came to help, decorated a car, and brought their families...thank you! The school Halloween parade and parties were equally great. The parking lots were filled, the halls were filled with laughter, and it was good to see the joy on the student's faces.

Thursday afternoon, the staff spent time working in teams on ELA, Math and Character Education. We are proud to say our work is strong. In ELA, our focus as a building is the delivery of reading instruction vertically aligned across the grades, helping students that need additional instruction for intervention or enrichment with small groups, and helping our students with the deep comprehension and thinking skills required to move through complex text. In Math, we are working on math language and the specific math talk and math moves to help our students communicate the complex problem solving required. In our Character Education program, we have identified our monthly focus traits and have developed our own lessons school wide to use in our classrooms and our Team Huddles.

Keep watching the Monitor-we will keep sharing our learning!

Have a wonderful weekend!

In Partnership,

Michelle Barsh

Martell students in the spotlight

One day earlier in the month, a group of students came up an asked me if they could do some research and fundraise for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The more I listened, I realized they learned about this from their bus driver, Mr. Dean, wearing a Pink Vest....

Here is the story of our wonderful students that took an idea, researched it, developed a plan and implemented it.

We are so proud of our Martell students!

Halloween Party Fun!

Please vote on November 6!

On November 6, 2018, voters in Troy will be asked to approve a proposal to replace and restore our current non-homestead operating millage.

*Does NOT affect homeowners—only businesses and non-homestead properties

*Generates 22.6 million dollars for the day to day operations of our schools (17% of our funding)

*Voter approval of this allows us to collect our full foundation allowance (If this fails, we would lose $400,000 this year—and that number could increase every year up to the full $22.6 million in a few short years.)

*ZERO increase to the voter approved 18 mill tax rate for businesses.

A "Yes" vote means the TSD can maintain the educational programs you have come to expect.

A "No" vote means the District could lose $22.6 million a year.

  • This millage “replacement and restoration” is ONLY assessed on non-homestead property. Owner occupied homes are exempt. It WON'T impact your property taxes at all.
