CMS NEWS & EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Cold and Flu Season is Here
The cold and flu season is here and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools would like to make families aware of the symptoms and how to prevent the spread of these illnesses.
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness. It can cause mild to severe symptoms, and at times can lead to death. Some people — such as the elderly, young children and people with certain health conditions — are at high risk for serious flu complications.
CMS does encourage families to have their children immunized against the flu. Although it does not eliminate the risk, the flu vaccine is the best way to protect against flu and can reduce symptoms.
To avoid giving the flu to others, stay home when you are sick, cough or sneeze into tissues and discard them properly, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an approved hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
Flu symptoms may include:
A 100 degree F or higher fever or feeling feverish (not everyone with the flu has a fever)
A cough and/or sore throat
A runny or stuffy nose
Headaches and/or body aches
Chills
Fatigue
Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (most common in children)
When a child is home with a fever or vomiting, families should wait 24 hours until the child is symptom free before going back to school.
Please, help CMS maintain a healthy education environment by helping to reduce exposure to the cold and flu.

AP Fair and Curriculum Night for Rising 9th Grade Families at SMHS
A message from Student Services at South Meck High School: In preparation for registration for the 2018-2019 school year, which will be occurring throughout February, we hold a general meeting for parents of rising 10th, 11th, and 12 graders (a separate meeting is held for rising 9th graders earlier that same evening). This event is planned for Monday, February 12th, here at South Meck in the auditorium. We plan to begin at 7 PM and will go through the registration process, how the registration cards are set up, online registration, and provide information about graduation requirements, course sequences, and other important topics to help you support your student in selecting courses for next year. On this evening we will also be holding an AP Fair, in the South Meck Media Center, from 6 PM – 7:30 PM. Teachers and students will be available to discuss with you the content and characteristics of the full range of AP courses we plan to offer, so that decisions to take these courses can be made with the necessary information to support success. Please consider coming early and taking part in this activity if there is any possibility your student will be considering AP coursework in the coming year. Rising 9th Grade Curriculum Night 5-6:45 and Rising 10th-12: 7:00-8:30.
