Back to School Readifest
Henderson County Schools Family Resource/Youth Services Centers would like to invite you to Back to School Readifest. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to get everything they need to start school and find out more about community agencies and resources.
New Immunizations Requirements
Starting July 1, 2018, the state of Kentucky will be requiring all students to provide proof of having received two doses of hepatitis A vaccine to attend school. Since the minimum spacing between the two doses is six months, families are asked to complete the following steps as soon as possible to ensure their child is compliant with this new regulation prior to the start of the new school year on August 8, 2018:
- Consult with your child's healthcare provider to ensure that these vaccines have been given to your child, or make an appointment.
- Obtain an updated Kentucky Immunization Certificate from your provider.
- Turn in a copy of a current Immunization to your child's school.
All students age 16 and older must show proof of having received two doses of meningococcal ACWY vaccine (also called MenACWY or Meningitis Booster) to attend school.

Students must turn in a copy by August 8th of receiving at least the first dose of vaccinations.
Henderson County Schools Participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program for the 2018-19 School Year
Henderson County Schools will be participating in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program with Full Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Implementation. As part of this program, all schools district wide (preschool-high school) will offer breakfast and a lunch every school day at no cost to students for the school year 2018-2019.
Students will be able to participate in this program without having to pay a reimbursable meal fee or submitting a free and reduced application. Families will be asked to complete a Household and Income (HIF) form for each school to maintain other areas of funding for essential student services.
For more information, you may contact Charlotte Baumgartner, Director of Child Nutrition at 270-831-5014 or e-mail at charlotte.baumgartner@henderson.kyschools.us.
Henderson County Schools Preschool Program Schedule Change for 2018-19 School Year
After an extensive study of other school districts, this locally designed model was recently approved by the Kentucky Department of Education. This new model of preschool services will still maintain the number of eligible children receiving services and will provide an increase in instructional time.
The new preschool schedule will be: Monday and Wednesdays for North Middle School feeder elementary schools (East Heights, South Heights, Cairo, and Spottsville) and Tuesday and Thursdays for South Middle School feeder elementary schools (Bend Gate Jefferson, Niagara and A.B. Chandler) from 7:30 a.m. -2:45 p.m.
“Our staff is excited to have the students for a full day as it will allow for an hour and a half additional dedicated instruction time per day. We believe this change will improve attendance for our preschoolers. The districts who have implemented similar schedules have had success and we look forward to trying this innovative approach,” states Ginger Ashby, Principal of Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center.
If you have any questions or to register your child for preschool, please contact the Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center at 270-854-014
Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities are something that schools, parents/guardians, and other organizations talk about a lot. What does “extracurricular” mean anyway? According to Webster’s Dictionary the definition states - “not falling within the scope of a regular curriculum; specifically: of or relating to officially or semi-officially approved and usually organized student activities (such as athletics) connected with school and usually carrying no academic credit.” While as a student gets older there are many more opportunities for extracurricular activities, there are still many opportunities for younger students as well.
Each person in this world, including children, has been given many different gifts. Growing those gifts as a child matures gives them tools to become active citizens. We can all remember the person who guided us along the way whether it be a piano teacher, art enthusiast, coach, business leader, mentor, regular education teacher, church leader or a specialized instructor in farming, automotive, welding, computer science, carpentry, marketing, business, health sciences, community service who taught us more than what was specifically in the curriculum.

Henderson County FFA chapter attended the Kentucky FFA Leadership Training Camp this summer.
On July 9th-13th the Henderson County FFA chapter had the opportunity to visit Hardinsburg Kentucky to attend the Kentucky FFA Leadership Training Camp.
The officers and committee chairmen of the chapter each attended a class everyday to teach them more about their position for 2018-2019 school year. This camp not only taught members new skills through their officer class but also allowed us to make new friends through the athletic groups in which every chapter was split into teams.
Our chapter was also allowed the opportunity to go through a ropes which challenged us to better communicate with one another and work together as a team. Henderson County was just 1 chapter among 22 other chapters attending camp the same week.
Our very own Kate Mcindoo was awarded the outstanding leadership award for the week along with Hunter Book and Allysa Beard winning the athletic award for their athletic team winning overall for the week.
Pictured below are attending members.
