Reading at Home
On Monday each student will begin bringing home a book bag from the classroom. In it will be 1 or more books for the week. Please be sure the bag of books is returned each day, as we will use them at school as well. On Friday, the bag will remain at school until the following Monday.
Plan to set aside time after school each day to read with your child. This should be a relaxed time when you can hear your child read while you are both close to the book. Along the way, have discussions about the story or the information in the books. That is so very important to get the most out of reading together.
Rereading the same book is also important. Multiple reads will help to develop fluency skills and will increase comprehension.
To increase engagement, consider having your child read for different purposes. For example, one time when you read discuss the characters and why they are acting the way they are. Another time, just focus on reading the dialogue so that it sounds like the character would actually sound; take turns being the different characters as if the book is a play. Another time you might discuss the sequence of important events, talk about connections your child makes, or explore any deeper meaning the story may have.
For informational texts, discuss the topic and explore what else your child knows about the subject. If your child is curious, consider looking for more books on the topic or find information on one of the sites available on your child's iPad through Classlink/OCT Learning Commons.
We will be sending home more suggestions about how to keep your child's reading time meaningful and enjoyable.
