WIS Library News - August 2018
Back to School!
Welcome to our "back to school" edition of the Williams Intermediate School library newsletter. This is a monthly publication to keep you up to date on all that's happening in our library. Within the first eight days of school, all students will have an opportunity to visit the library and check out books. We want to see our students grow as readers this year. We do not use Accelerated Reader at WIS; instead, we encourage students to read for enjoyment and find books that truly fit their personality and taste. Please visit our web site for library policies, a link to the catalog, and more!
Book Clubs Starting in September
When students visit the library for library orientation, they will learn all about our lunchtime book clubs. We have two clubs--one for each grade. They will meet on Mondays during lunch. Applications will be available during orientation and will be due by the end of August. Club sizes are limited, so be sure to turn in applications as soon as you receive them.
The library is busy, even in the summer!
We hosted a workshop for school librarians that was sponsored by the JSU Inservice Center. Over 60 librarians participated!
Connecting Teachers and Readers
Our teachers submitted their favorite book titles for this fun bulletin board.
#HouseofBlues
The library now has a blue accent wall! Shout-out to Mr. Eric Lee for his assistance with this project.
Book Review - Front Desk by Kelly Yang
I was able to squeeze in the reading of 13 books during my crazy busy summer. I read some great ones, but by far, my very favorite, and the one everyone in the children's book world is talking about right now, is Front Desk by Kelly Yang. Based on the author's own childhood as a young immigrant from China, this is the story of Mia, her parents, and the motel they manage for its ruthless owner. Because her parents are so busy cleaning rooms and doing laundry, 10-year-old Mia offers to run the front desk of the motel and meets an array of interesting people and triumphs over numerous adversities with persistence and determination. I would not be surprised to see this one nominated for many awards and medals this next year!
