A Note from Mrs. Schneider
Dear Woodland Families,
This week our 4th and 5th grade students have been ROCKSTARS! Our 5th grade students finished up the last two of their four MSTEP assessments and our 4th graders took their math and ELA tests. This school year has been unusual to say the least and students have struggled a bit with all-day school stamina, but the teachers and I were so impressed with the effort the students put in while testing and the patience they showed as classmates may have taken longer to finish. What TEAMWORK!!
Today, our 5th graders started on what we call Route 5/6. Mr. Ohrt, AMS principal, and Mrs. Wilson, 6th grade counselor, came to Woodland to introduce the students to the middle school and went over course selection. Since Ms. Pederson, choir and band teacher, was not able to host her Instrument Petting Zoo where she brings students over to demonstrate all instrument choices, she created a video slide show that all 5th graders watched yesterday. Next Wednesday, Mr. Ohrt would like to meet with all of you virtually to introduce himself and Mrs. Gomez, the assistant principal, to explain the class selection process and next steps. Next week starts our Leadership Team's Cereal Food Drive. Breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day. Many children face food insecurity over the summer when schools are not in session. We will be partnering with Gleaners Food Bank to help families in our community over the summer. Looking forward to seeing what we are able to bring in and what fun we might have with it! :)

Route 5/6 the Move to Middle School ~ from Mrs. Wilson, 6th grade counselor
We are excited to share that the 2021-2022 scheduling process has started with classroom presentations. We have scheduled visits to each of the elementary buildings to meet with the 5th grade students and teachers to discuss the transition from 5th to 6th grade and scheduling for next year.
The purpose of these presentations will be to begin the process for transition and orientation to Avondale Middle School. Students now begin the process to complete their course requests for next school year. All documents necessary are included in this email and are also housed on the AMS website under the Curriculum & Scheduling tab. It is required that each student have a Course Request form completed by May 12th. There are two options to complete the required information. There is an electronic Google Course Request form that is available, as well as a physical BLUE sheet that was provided to the in-person students, if needed. All families are welcome to use the electronic form. It is required that there is a form completed for each student.
As we promised the students, we are also attaching the scheduling presentation so that they can also share their new knowledge and excitement about AMS with you as well.
We will be hosting a virtual Parent/Guardian meeting on Wednesday, May 5th at 6 PM. We will cover the scheduling presentation that the students receive in their elementary buildings, procedures, and "how-to" information for completing the required student Course Requests as well as an opportunity for questions and answers with Mr. Ohrt and Mrs. Wilson.

Parents and guardians are now asked to review the BLUE course request sheet OR the electronic Google form with their student and finalize course requests. There are detailed instructions included in the Sixth Grade Transition Update packet. These forms include making one circled choice of either Band, Choir, or Trimester Elective Rotation. If your student selects Band or Choir as their choice then please also make sure that you have additionally completed the information from the Band or Choir web page that was sent home earlier and also included in this email. Again, we ask that these are either completed electronically or returned to their 5th grade teacher by Wednesday, May 12th.
Please think about course requests as you would a hotel reservation, we build our staffing and schedule based on the requests that we receive in May. There are no changes permitted after May 12th. For example, when making a scheduling choice for Band or Choir, this is a year-long commitment. Please take time to select the appropriate classes with informed decisions so we can support successful student and staff schedules.

Leadership Cereal Food Drive
In-seat students will have Gleaners boxes outside of their classrooms to collect the cereal. Virtual students will have boxes for their classroom in the Main Entrance foyer. Please invite your family and friends to participate in this fun food drive!
We have collected 408 boxes of cereal so far! Way to go Wildcats!
Spring Picture Day
Picture flyers were sent home earlier this week and reminder slips were sent home today in Friday folders. The process has changed a bit this year. LifeTouch will still be photographing everyone, but are no longer producing packages for everyone. Orders can be placed either online using the online code EVTVHXC44 at mylifetouch.com before picture day and for about 48 hours after picture day or they can turn in a payment envelope to the photographer on picture day. All students that pay for a package will receive one. Everyone else will receive a proof sheet that gives information to order pictures at a later date.
If your child is remote and you would like to have their picture taken, please come to Woodland anytime between the hours of 1:30pm-3pm.

If you are a school of choice family that is already part of the Avondale School District, you do not need to re-apply each year. However, if you have another child that you would like to attend Avondale Schools, who is not a current student, you DO need to apply for a SOC spot for that child.

You may download the "Clear To Go" app on your mobile device and have it alert you every morning to submit your "Clear To Go" screening for your student(s).

Updated Covid Protection Reminders
Because there has been outdated and sometimes misleading or conflicting information in the news and on social media about COVID-19, we are sending this note to reiterate and clarify what to do if your student is either exposed to a positive COVID-19 case, is experiencing symptoms, is awaiting COVID-19 test results, or has tested positive for COVID-19.
AS RECOMMENDED BY THE OAKLAND COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND THE CDC:
The quarantine period for Avondale Schools is currently 14 days. Quarantine guidelines do not apply to anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 within the last 3 months. Quarantine guidelines also do not apply to anyone who has received their final dose of the vaccine at least 14 days prior to an exposure.
Isolate is a term used for those who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or who are awaiting a test result. Those in isolation must remain in separate rooms and avoid sharing personal items.
Quarantine is a term used for those who have been deemed a close contact to someone diagnosed with COVID-19. Those in quarantine must always remain home, which includes staying home from school, athletic events and other activities.
If your child is exposed to COVID-19 by someone who is a MEMBER OF YOUR HOUSEHOLD:
- Complete the Clear To Go screening and notify your school.
- Isolate the household members who are positive for COVID-19 for 14 days from the start of symptoms or the positive test collection date, whichever occurred first.
- Quarantine the child who has been exposed to the positive case for 14 days from the date of last exposure. If the child in quarantine is re-exposed to the positive case during the 14-day quarantine period, the quarantine period must reset to another 10 days from the date of exposure. In some cases, the quarantine period for someone living with someone who has COVID-19 could be for a total of 28 days.
If your child is exposed OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOUSEHOLD (at school, in the community, at a club or athletic event, etc.):
- Complete the Clear To Go screening. If the exposure occurred at school or while participating in an Avondale School District activity or event you will be notified by an Avondale staff member.
- Quarantine your child from interactions with others, by NOT allowing them to attend school and NOT allowing them to participating in athletic or club activities for 14 days from the date of exposure.
- Have your child tested for COVID-19 and provide the test results to your school, if positive. A negative test will not permit your child to return to school early.
If your child is experiencing symptoms:
- Complete the Clear To Go screening
- A failed screening requires that your child remain home for a minimum of 14 days, unless you provide a doctor’s note with an alternative diagnosis to return.
- Have your child tested for COVID-19 and provide the positive or negative test result to your school.
Alternatively, visit your medical provider for a diagnosis that is not related to COVID-19. Provide a doctor’s note to your school before returning.
If your child is waiting for their own test results:
- Isolate your child at home until the test result is returned.
- Those in isolation must remain in separate rooms and avoid sharing personal items.
- Please do not allow your child to attend school or an athletic or club activity while a test result is pending.
- Complete the Clear To Go screening and notify your school.
If your child has received a positive COVID-19 test:
- Complete the Clear To Go screening and notify your school.
- Isolate your child for a minimum of 14 days from the start of symptoms or the positive test collection date, whichever occurred first.
- If no symptoms remain after 14 days, they may return to school without a negative COVID-19 test.
We are committed to keeping our schools open for in-seat instruction and maintaining a safe environment for staff and all students in our schools. We need your help to do this. Please help us by adhering to the procedures outlined above. Please help us by having your child wear a mask when outside of your home and washing their hands frequently. The CDC has stated that these two mitigation practices help to curb the spread of COVID-19.

It could be to create a unique invention, to bring joy through art or music, or to raise their children to become good people. These people have a true calling.

There are two (2) open Executive Board positions for the 2021-22 school year. All Executive Board Members attend most PTO and Executive Board meetings. They also need to be available for needed votes and input throughout the year.
Please consider volunteering to be a part of the Woodland PTO, even if you do not want to hold a Board position. All positions are supported by the other executive board members, as well as a host of parent and staff volunteers. We are always looking for good help!

Free Food For Families
Chartwells will be distributing breakfasts and lunches for children to ANY family that wishes to receive them every Wednesday from 11:00am-1:00pm at Avondale High School. Your children do NOT need to be present, and your children do NOT need to be enrolled in the Avondale School District to receive food.
