Imprinting is a critical period of time early in an animals life when it forms attachments and learns about its own identity, birds and mammals have a pre-programmed drive to imprint on their mothers, imprinting provides info to animals about who they are and who they will be attracted to when they reach adulthood

The dog was the first thing that the ducklings seen when they were hatched so they assumed it was their mother
