Influenza (Flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
CDC recommends the following Flu prevention actions:
· Get the flu vaccine each year.
· Avoid contact with sick people. The Flu virus spreads mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with the flu sneeze, cough, or talk.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, since this is the way germs spread.
· Disinfect objects and surfaces that may be contaminated with germs. Clean frequently touched objects such as doorknobs, keyboards, and phones.
· If you or your child gets sick, stay home for at least 24 hours after being fever-free.
· If you get sick, limit contact with others as much as possible.
