Oceanside High School Weekly Update

The Pirate Way
Hello Pirates!
We are having such a great time at OHS. Our staff and students have settled in nicely to the new schedule. This week we also had another "Pirate Buc" drawing to celebrate our students on campus. Five students' "Pirate Bucs" were pulled from the treasure chest and then were announced during today's morning announcements. Students can receive a "Pirate Buc" from any staff member on campus for demonstrating any of our Pirate Core Values.
This week we also continued to work on our OHS Wellness Center. Take a moment and check out all of the amazing things muralist Skye said about working with our OHS art students. I am privileged to be here everyday to see how awesome our students are, but it is nice to have someone who doesn't have that opportunity get blown away by how great our students are!
Pirates you are a part of something big! You belong and will always belong in the Oceanside High School Pirate Community. What an amazing feeling to realize you belong to something bigger than the individual Pirate, but rather part of a 100 year plus Pirate Ship Community!
Regardless of where you may go and no matter what you end up accomplishing the one thing that you have to count on is that you will ALWAYS be a PIRATE!
Stay safe! Know you are loved and belong to the Pirate community - this is the Pirate Way!

OHS PIRATE SPORTS UPDATE
Water Polo sinks Valley Center
The Oceanside boys water polo team may be young, but it doesn't play like it needs arm floaties or a life preserver. The Pirates, who are predominately made up of freshmen and sophomores in key positions, dominated Valley Center, 18-3, in non-league play at the Wagner Aquatic Center Wednesday night.
Sophomore Collin DuBois led OHS with 5 goals, while senior Blake Munoz had a pair of 3's (assists and steals). Also, goalie Kaleb Dorse had 7 blocks and 3 assists.Score from today vs valley center on 9/6.
OHS' JV team pummeled the Jaguars, as well, 19-1.
Girls golf wins again, now 6-0
The rough may have been thick, but the Oceanside girls golf team was smooth around the greens and won its six consecutive match, 222-332, over Escondido High School at the Twin Oaks Valley Golf Club Wednesday.
Lia Nance shot a 39 to take medalist honors again, while Kassidy Stevens had a 41. Danyele Bertino (44) and Leila Kai Hernandez (45) were the other low scorers for the Pirates.
Girls tennis on the rise
With its No. 1 and 2 singles players out, the Oceanside girls tennis team used a new lineup in its 15-3 loss to visiting High Tech High-San Marcos Wednesday.
"Our new girls were having longer rallies and developing their games," said first-year coach Baovi Tran. "We had some parents, grandmas, and friends coming to watch us play, which made this an awesome day."
Girls volleyball sweeps Mar Vista
For years, coaches in nearly every sport have rules about bus rides, especially after a win or a loss.
If the team loses, the trip home is often a somber one with nothing but whispers. However, if the team wins, the sounds of laughter, music and cheers dominate the airwaves.
On the way back from Imperial Beach, it was a "happy" bus for the Oceanside girls volleyball team.
The Pirates swept host Mar Vista, 27-25, 25-14, 25-22, before a small, but rowdy crowd to remain unbeaten in their first three matches this season. In fact, OHS was perfect on the day, winning at both the junior varsity and novice levels as well.
Oceanside used a balanced offense to keep the Mariners off balance with Mikayla Poumele-Flores (9 kills), Faye Naotala (8 kills), and Dublin Leeds (6 kills). Setter Malia Jones, in her first start, overcame some early game nerves to pile up 21 assists and 5 digs.
Naotala spearheaded the defense with 11 digs and Poumele-Flores added 4 digs for the Pirates.

OHS PTSO
For those new to OHS, PTSO includes Parents, Teachers and Students to support the school community. Some of our goals are to promote parent interaction, support the faculty and staff and promote student achievement. Each year is a bit different so we welcome your ideas on ways we can support the school. The donations we receive and the funds we raise go toward staff appreciation events, teacher and club grants, student events, and more. We work closely with our principal Mrs.Garrahy, the administrators and counseling team to be responsive to current needs. All members have a vote in how our funds are used and we have a few openings for leadership positions if you want to give some time.
If you would like to join us or renew your membership for the year, please fill out the form here: OHS PTSO Form 2023-24. If you are interested in volunteering or serving on the board, please indicate that on the form.
Whether you participate in meetings or not, you can support our efforts with a tax-deductible donation. Please go here: PTSO Donation Page (Paypal or CC) or use our new venmo @osideptso. And please join us for our restaurant nights throughout the year.
We typically meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm. Stay connected with us by joining our Facebook group @Oceanside High School PTSO Parents for Pirates or following us on Instagram @piratesptso.
