AMCMS Principal's Office
What's Going on in the Principal's Office?!
My Challenge to You
I am sure that you have seen at least one of the two commercials above over the last few weeks or months. The Settlers. "We settle, its what we do." It makes for a funny commercial when they bring in the pioneer days approach but when I think about it, it makes me sad. I do not ever want to settle. I hope you do not either.
I made a decision when I was a teenager that I was going to have a different life than what was laid out before me. If I had not been driven to go to college I would have most likely ended up living in my hometown and working in the local industry. Now, don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with that but it is not what I wanted for myself. I had to decide. I had to choose. Then I had to act.
The same is true for you in your classroom and in your teaching. You can settle. You can do what you have always done and maybe you will get the results you have always gotten but I predict you will not even achieve those results. Why? Because today's student does not want to learn through the traditional ways of "doing school". Today's student really wants to know and understand the purpose behind what they are learning. Today's student has the world in their pocket so school has to be more than just knowledge and memorization. Today's school must be about creation and application in real world settings.
As we are closing out this school year over the next 6 weeks I challenge you to reflect over your teaching practices. I challenge you to reflect over how you delver the curriculum. I challenge you to as yourself this question, "Am I settling by teaching how I have always taught or am I working to create learning experiences that challenge and engage all of my learners?"
Think. Achieve. Succeed.
Jeff
