What is happening in RM 16?
Week of January 22nd
Writing: Personal Narratives-This week, we learned how to take a topic and zoom in to a small moment using watermelons and seeds as an analogy. For example, if the topic was My Family Vacation (whole watermelon), I could narrow it down to Disney World (Slice), but I could narrow it even more by focusing on My Ride on Slinky Dog (Seed). We wrote our first "seed" story Friday. Next week, we will set goals for this unit and work on writing a good lead/hook for our stories.
Math: We will be applying what we learned in our Metric Units chapter to real-word problems.
I have noticed a good number of kiddos still skip counting, drawing pictures, etc. to solve their multiplication facts. At this point in the year, I expect them to be able to solve mentally using helper facts. For example, if the problem is 7 x 6, they can break the 7 into 5 and 2. First they would solve 5 x 6, then 2 x 6, and add those answers together. This is something you could work at in the car, at a restaurant while you wait, etc. Below are some ways they can practice online, but it does not have to involve an electronic. ;)
Websites for fact practice:
2 digit x 1 digit with regrouping
Game for fact practice:
Multiplication squares in their binder
Science: We learned all about the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. We also learned that there are three necessary things to make a shadow-surface, object, and a light source, and why our shadows look different at different times of the day. Next week, we will dig into gravity!
