Renaming John Muir Outdoor School Update
Dear Ashland School District community,
We are excited to take the final steps in renaming John Muir Outdoor School.
We have conducted a thorough and transparent process including:
a) soliciting more than fifty new name ideas from students and the community,
b) forming a committee with broad representation to research names and evaluate them against the district and school's vision, mission, and values, and our equity policy,
c) narrowing the list down to four contenders which were then further weighed by JMOS students, families and staff,
d) recommending two name finalists to the school board for consideration
The two name finalists are:
- Ashland Outdoor School
- TRAILS Outdoor School: Trust Respect Awareness Interdependency Leadership Stewardship
The ASD Board would like to hear input from members of the ASD community. Please share your feedback with us through the digital survey accessed via this link.
We want to learn your name preference and rationale to ensure that the Board hears multiple perspectives on this question before making a final decision at the June board meeting.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!

Summer Volleyball
Rowing Nationals
They will be racing in Florida against the other top qualifying teams from the Northwest region, and six other regions across the United States. This is the third year that Rogue Rowing has sent qualifying athletes to compete in this event.
Youth Nationals is a great opportunity to represent the Rogue Valley and compete against athletes from across the country. Good luck to all competing athletes and go Rogue!
Golf Accomplishments
We had two golfers qualify for our district tournament, and one continuing on to our regional qualifier and eventually to the state tournament. These are all two-day, 36-hole tournaments at difficult courses with some stiff competition.
Sophomore Isaac Larson earned 16th place overall in our district tournament at Tokatee Golf Club on May 3rd and 4th with a 95 on the first day, and a 92 on day two. He still had a very impressive performance as a 10th grader and has a bright future ahead of him.
Senior Toby Barnes earned 6th place overall at the district tournament, earning the first position on the 2nd All-League Team with an 83 on the first day, and a 78 on the second. At regionals, Toby scored an impressive 82 and an 80, for a third-place finish of 162, guaranteeing him a spot at the state tournament.
Last week was the 5A Oregon State Golf Championship at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis. Toby continued to play some impressive golf against the best high school golfers in Oregon. He finished the first day tied for 12th place with a 79 and worked his way up the leaderboard finishing the second day with a 75. Here are the official results.
More important than these impressive scores, our coaches constantly heard feedback from other coaches and officials on how our boys were the most respectful and considerate players on the field. In a sport where etiquette is equally as important as technique-- this is something to be proud of, and a testament to all of us here at AHS and our greater community.
Congrats!

Vote for Truth To Power!
Vote for Ashland High School's Truth to Power club on the Co-op's Change for Good ballot!
Truth to Power has been included on the Ashland Food Co-op's upcoming ballot as a potential recipient for the 2022 Change for the Good program. Every year the Ashland Food Co-op Owner-Members vote for 12 different organizations or groups to give the "round up at the register" funds to. Each group receives the "round up" change raised for one month. This will help us acquire and upkeep equipment to produce podcasts, like our recent series on the Ukraine conflict or our nationally-recognized NPR submission, along with funding our projects, like enacting the Menstrual Dignity Act at AHS and hosting antiracism programming. If you are currently an Owner-Member for the Ashland Food Co-op (meaning you have a Co-Op card!), we urge you to vote for Truth to Power on the AFC ballot from May 24th-June 6th. If you are interested in becoming an Owner-Member for Ashland Food Co-op you can learn more here: https://ashlandfood.coop/become-owner
Thanks so much for your support!
