AREA GIRL SCOUTS GIVE BACK TO APHS, AMS
Girl Scouts of NENY offers a Council-wide service project that is tied to the “Sweets and Treats” Fall Fundraising Program. This year they focused on wiping out hunger by donating to the APHS and AMS food pantries! Read more here.
BOWLING TEAMS DECORATE HI-WAY RECREATION
The boys and girls bowling teams took some time to decorate Hi-Way Recreation. Afterward, AP defeated Troy 18 1/2 - 13 1/2.
AMS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN PATRIOT'S PEN WRITING COMPETITION
The annual Patriot’s Pen writing competition, sponsored locally by Sullivan Jones VFW Post 7466 in Poestenkill, had a theme of “What Makes America Great.” Paula DeAndres placed first in the competition and took home a $100 prize. Madisyn Locci placed second and won $75 while Mikayla Malenfant finished third, winning $50. The three students are from Ms. Fitch and Ms. Perrotta’s Grade 8 Social Studies classes at Algonquin Middle School.
STUDENTS ATTEND YOUTH LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
Eight high school students attended the 17th Annual Youth Leadership Summit, which focused on character education. This year’s theme was “Other People Matter: Are We Grateful for the People in our Lives?” Assembly member John McDonald led a discussion with students on the importance of community and civic responsibility.
PARKER BROWN ROLLS PERFECT GAME
Parker Brown bowled a perfect game on Thursday, Dec. 6. The varsity student-athlete rolled a 300 in a 21-11 victory over Schenectady.
CSEA DONATES TO APCSD
Members of the CSEA Averill Park Unit #8256 ran a food drive from Nov. 4 to Dec. 3 to benefit their very own students and families in their school district. A total of 880 items were collected and shared between the district pantries. Read more here.
APHS FRENCH STUDENTS EXCHANGE PHOTOS WITH PEN PALS
APHS French students recently exchanged ̏photos livresques˝ (book-based photographs) with their pen pals from St. Brieuc, France. Mme Mondon, the English teacher in France, originally came up with the idea and invited Mr. Brown’s APHS students to participate. Students either imitated a special image or incorporated their own face with a book cover.

MS. BROWN PRESENTS TO FRENCH STUDENTS ABOUT CAMEROON
APHS French students recently attended a presentation by Julia Brown, a Peace Corps health volunteer in the French-speaking country of Cameroon. Julia (APHS French teacher Mr. Brown’s daughter) spoke about common misconceptions and interesting facts about Africa, as well as the differences between Cameroonian French and the French typically taught in American high schools.
RPI STUDENTS PRESENT AT AMS
RPI students visited Algonquin Middle School and shared their insights about the college application process, balancing school and life, and the importance of time management. Everyone learned a lot!
5TH GRADERS HOLD ESPERANZA RISING PARTY AT WSL
Fifth grade students at West Sand Lake Elementary School had a wonderful time trying new foods and making yarn dolls at the Esperanza rising party with Mrs.Beck! Read more here.
AMS GETS DECORATED FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Algonquin Middle School custodian, Connie McCullen, came in on the last day of her vacation to decorate the outside of the school with greens she makes by hand while on her vacation! We appreciate all the Ms. Connie does for our school and community.

DEPUTY NIKLES HONORED AT WARRIOR WAY ASSEMBLY
It was another great Warrior Way Assembly at Algonquin Middle School! Tim played the piano to welcome everyone; Student Council shared its next school-wide challenge; and AMS recognized Deputy Nikles as the Ultimate Warrior!

STUDENT-ATHLETES ATTEND SUBURBAN COUNCIL SUMMIT
Some our finest student-athletes attended the Suburban Council Leadership Summit at Union College! Coach Gobel presented on what it takes to be a captain and attendees played trivia.
PES STUDENTS CREATE HOLIDAY CRAFTS AFTER SCHOOL
Organized by the Poestenkill PTA, with the support of many volunteers, PES students created a holiday craft during Holiday Happenings. The students had a wonderful time creating the craft and the recipients of this gift will most assuredly be delighted by the handmade creation!
AMS CELEBRATES COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION WEEK
AMS students had a blast coding and playing with Makey Makey microcontrollers to celebrate Computer Science Education Week! Thanks goes to Sarah Fiess of Tech Valley High School who collaborated on this special, nation-wide week.
U.S. ARMY VISITS APHS AUTO TECH PROGRAM
The U.S. Army visited the APHS Auto Tech program on campus! Students explored the Humvee and the innards of its diesel engine. Principal for a Day, Miss Lombardi, was there to oversee the visit.
AMS COLLECTS TOYS FOR TOTS
Algonquin Middle School's Student Council ran another successful Toys for Tots Drive. Students collected many items that will be donated to families in need this holiday season!
PES INSTALLS 'TRY IT TUESDAY' IN CAFETERIA
Poestenkill Elementary School kicked off a new program called "Try It Tuesday"! On Tuesdays, students that purchase school lunch are able to try a new menu item. The first week it was Chickpea Salad, which they voted on whether or not they liked it and want to have it again.
AP CONNECTIONS RECEIVE HELPING HAND, CREATE HOLIDAY VILLAGE
AP Connections created a holiday village and Deputy Nikles jumped right in to help out! Who knew he was so crafty and a master with the glue gun!
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS HOLD WINTER CONCERTS
All three elementary schools held their Winter Concerts. Each were well-attended, as everyone celebrated the growth of our student musicians.
SAM HART WINS AMS SPELLING BEE CHAMPIONSHIP
Sam Hart spelled A-P-O-L-L-O correctly to win his 3rd straight AMS Spelling Bee championship! Kaitlyn Farron and Paula DeAndres rounded out the top 3. Great job everyone!
5TH GRADERS RECEIVE INTERNET SAFETY PRESENTATION
Alexa Benincasa, Investigative Specialist from NYS Division of Criminal Justice Missing Persons Clearinghouse, gave a presentation about Online Safety for 5th graders in all three elementary schools. Thank you for taking the time Miss Benincasa!

WSL SPREADS KINDNESS TO DELIVERY WORKERS DURING HOLIDAYS
West Sand Lake Elementary School puts a smile on the face of our UPS delivery person, making his day a little easier, even during this extremely busy time of year! One of our staff members has placed a box of treats in the Main Office to share with our delivery people as a way to show our appreciation of them. Even the smallest acts of kindness can make a difference in someone's day!
ODYSSEY OF THE MIND TEAM MENTORS NEXT GENERATION
The Ninth Grade Odyssey of the Mind team volunteered to visit and mentor the Third Grade Odyssey of the Mind team at Poestenkill Elementary after school.
APHS ORNAMENTS ON DISPLAY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
The ornaments created by Averill Park High School students are now on display in Washington, D.C.! APHS was chosen to represent New York state in the 2019 National Christmas Tree Experience. Students chose topics ranging from the state flower, tree, beverage, and bush, to our cities and mountains.
MRS. BRADLEY RETIRES AFTER 30 YEARS AT APCSD
Grace Bradley has seen many generations of families come and go through the classrooms in the Averill Park Central School District. With 30 years of service in the books, she is officially retiring. Read more here.
DONATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR MAKE-A-WISH
Once again, the students, families and staff of Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary are raising funds to support Make-A-Wish of Northeastern New York and their mission to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. During the month of December we are accepting donations of $1 or more for the purchase of stars that will be displayed throughout our school.
