ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT!
Attendance matters and it also can drastically impede a child's academic progress and achievement. According to Attendance Works Research,
Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. Read more...

Absenteeism and its ill effects start early. One in 10 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent. Read more...

By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school. Read more...
Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence. Read more...
Students who live in communities with high levels of poverty are four times more likely to be chronically absent than others often for reasons beyond their control, such as unstable housing, unreliable transportation and a lack of access to health care. Read more...

Most school districts and states don’t look at all the right data to improve school attendance. They track how many students show up every day and how many are skipping school without an excuse, but not how many are missing so many days in excused and unexcused absence that they are headed off track academically.

IS YOUR CHILD READY FOR STATE TESTING?
Read how you can help!
STAAR Testing Resources Available
As this year comes to a close, during the last week of April, students in Spring ISD will begin our annual STAAR testing. The STAAR test is an important assessment in that it provides valuable information on how your child is progressing for each tested grade level and subject.
For high school students, End of Course exams are required for graduation, so it’s important that students take these exams so that they stay on track for a timely graduation.
This year’s STAAR tests are more important than ever so that your child’s school can best help your student with areas of growth and areas of mastery. The data will also be used to ensure our curriculum and teaching practices are aligned to what our students need to be successful this coming year and beyond.
If you would like to work with your child at home on the mastery of skills before the test, your child can access some great instructional materials from their my.springisd.org portal. We recommend the following resources:
Elementary
ST Math (Math, K-5)
Amplify Reading (Reading, K-5)
Education Galaxy (Math, Science, Reading, K-5)
Middle School
Mathia (Math, 6-8)
Amplify Reading (Reading, 6-8)
Legends of Learning (Math, Science, 6-8)
High School
APEX (All STAAR EOC courses)
On the days of testing, please ensure that your child gets a full night's sleep and arrives at the bus stop or school on time. This will help ensure a smooth start to your child’s testing day.
From Our Counselor...Social Emotional Learning ( S.E.L.) At Home
Hello families!
We are continuing to focus on "Anxiety". Last week I shared what anxiety may look like in children. Here is an activity that you can do with your child to help reduce anxiety.
Glitter Calm Down Jars
Glitter jars are a sensory toy that can help calm emotional kids.
With their swirling patterns and pop of sparkle, these glitter jars or ‘calm down jars’ are the perfect antidote for stressed out kids – helping to soothe and calm troubled minds. Just give them a good shake, then watch until the glitter settles in the bottom of the jar to refocus and refresh any overwhelmed child.
Glitter jars can also be used as a ‘time out’ timer. Simply tell your little one to watch the jar until the flakes have all fallen – it’s only at this point that they’ll be allowed to leave the time out area. Using extra glue will mean that the glitter floats for longer, so you can adjust the length of the time out according to the child’s age.
To make a glitter jar you will need:
- A jar or plastic bottle
- A jug of warm water
- 60ml glitter glue
- 3 drops of gel food colouring
- 60g-80g glitter
1. Add warm water to your jar or bottle
Pour the water until it reaches around a third of the way up.
2. Add the glitter glue
Squeeze in your chosen glitter glue and stir until it has combined with the water.
3. Add around 3 drops of food color and stir
You can add more or less depending on your preferred shade, but remember not to add too much or the mixture will become very dark and it will become hard to see the glitter.
4. Pour in the glitter
Again, you can use more or less than suggested, or go for a mix of chunky and fine glitter to give more texture to your jar. Stir well until combined with the existing mixture.
5. Top up your jar with the rest of the warm water
Pour in the water until it is almost full. Leave a little gap at the top of the jar to allow the mixture to move. Then secure the lid.
Optional: If you like, you can use glue to stick the lid to the top of the jar or bottle.
Have a great week!
¡Hola familias!

The Window to Submit a Transfer Application Opens April 4
Spring ISD Parent/Guardians:
If your student is seeking to attend a school in 2022-23 for which they are not zoned, the window to submit a transfer application is set to open on April 4 at www.springisd.org/transfers.
The district offers different transfer types depending on the situation. Regardless of transfer type, transportation will NOT be provided to students. More information on each of the transfer types is available at www.springisd.org/transfers.
Just a reminder, students attending the district’s schools of choice (Roberson Middle School, Spring Leadership Academy, Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, P-TECH at Dekaney High School, and Spring Early College Academy) are NOT considered transfer students since these schools do not have attendance boundaries. Students accepted into these programs receive transportation.
Should you have any questions about the online transfer application, please reach out to your student’s current principal.
