MLC Weekly News and Notes

February 20-24th

Hello, MLC community! What a beautiful week of kindness our school participated in! Thank you to Julie and Sarah W. for leading this charge! It sure was amazing to have our new Assistant Principal, Darren in the building. I am looking forward to having him around to support and grow with MLC!

This week we have a few trips, celebrations and gatherings. We end with a Black History Month assembly led by our newly formed Students of Color group. Despite a long history of racism and persecution, it is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the accomplishments made by African Americans in this nation. While February and Black History Month is coming to a close, it is important to recognize the importance in learning and celebrating Black History all year.

It is looking mighty cold mid-week. Please remember to bundle up for outside time! If you are in need of a coat, we can help! Please connect with Clement. :)

In case you missed it...HERE is a copy of the February Issue of the MLC Times. Nice job, Newspaper Club!

Let's have a fantastic four day week!

Best,

Suezann

OBOB Comes to MLC!

After a groundswell of student interest, MLC has joined the OBOB (Oregon Battle Of the Books) world. A group of 4-6 grade students have volunteered to take part in a friendly competition based on reading. There are two divisions, grades 3-5 and 6-8. This year we are piloting the program and have four teams in the grade 3-5 division and two teams in the 6-8 division. This is a fun way for students to share their love of books and challenge themselves and each other in a competition. Students signed up for an elective to meet in their teams, discuss the books they have read, write questions based on those books and then participate in practice battles using the questions they have written. Through a series of battles, teams will accumulate points for their correct answers. One team from each division will go on to compete in the regional tournament for each division. We are looking for a few volunteers to help out as chaperones and timers or scorekeeper at those events, no previous experience necessary! Please contact Susan Stronach sstronach@pps.net if you are interested.

The dates for the regional tournaments are:

Saturday, March 4 at Lakeridge Middle School in Lake Oswego from 9:15 am to 3 pm for the 6-8 division.

Saturday, March 18th at Capitol Hill Elementary School 9:15 am to 3 pm for the 3-5 division.

Welcome Darren! (in case you missed it...)

Hello everyone, it is with great excitement that I begin a new journey as MLC’s assistant principal. Previously, I taught high school and middle school English, worked as a behavior management specialist, and dean of students; I have also acted as principal and assistant principal when they were absent. In my current role as a dean of students at a CTE 6 - 12 school, we don’t have an assistant principal therefore I essentially fulfill that role and more. My daughter attended PPS K-12, had an excellent academic experience, and I want to help provide the same opportunity for other PPS students. Outside of school, I still play soccer, for a brief time I worked for U.S. Soccer, and I continue to conduct coaching education for the Oregon Youth Soccer Association. The picture was taken from the Statue of Liberty with my wife and daughter, and NYC, one of my favorite places, is in the background. In addition to being able to ride my bike to school, I am looking forward to meeting all of you in person and welcome the opportunity to be part of the MLC community.

Safety Updates and Reminders

6th-12th OFF CAMPUS LUNCH SIGN OUT - YOU ARE DOING GREAT!!

Starting Tuesday January 17th, we are implementing a sign out process for students choosing to go offsite for lunch. Here is that process:

6th grade: Sign out on a clipboard in their homeroom classroom. (Maggie or Kathleen)

7th-12th: Sign out using phone or device with QR code located at the front doors or on paper sign out in the front office.

Students will not need to sign back in due to teachers taking attendance after lunch.

COVID TESTS:

MLC has received several COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test kits. The kits are available in the main office.

WEATHER:

Communications about inclement weather go out in a variety of ways, including text messages, robocalls, emails, and are posted on the PPS website. If you are a parent or guardian, a student, or a PPS staff member, you can opt in to receive texts by texting YES to 68453.

DROP OFF:

1st-8th students should not arrive to MLC before 8:15 a.m. At that time, students will need to wait outside until 8:25 unless they are eating breakfast. Breakfast students may enter the cafeteria at 8:15. Students may not enter the other areas of the school until 8:25 to start the school day at 8:30 a.m.

Unfortunately, we do not have enough staff to monitor all areas of the building and outdoors before those times. Teachers and staff are preparing for the day.

We want to make sure all students are safe and in designated areas where there is adequate supervision.

Kindergarten students will now be dropped off and picked up in the Kindergarten classroom!

Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe!

State Testing 30 Day Notice with Opt Out Form: December 6, 2022

PPS families,

As required by the Oregon Department of Education, we are providing you the 30 Day Notice and Opt Out Form. The notice is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian and Somali on the PPS Research, Assessment, and Accountability website.

Statewide testing is part of our balanced assessment system that offers all students, especially historically underserved students, opportunities to demonstrate their progress. Information provided by student assessments is critical in helping us determine district and school priorities for improving student learning.

If you have questions, please contact your school office.

Art is ALIVE at MLC!

Do you wonder what's going on in the Kx8 Art Room? Art teacher Ned and his students are posting their creations and flops on Instagram at bettys_atelier_mlc in honor of Betty Mather, one of MLC's original teacher/founders! Betty taught in room 106 for the first third of our school's history. Betty's space was the beating heart of the school where all children met and created.
