Glennwood Elementary ~ Where Learning Takes Flight

Holly Brookins, PhD, Principal ~ Summer Clayton, Assistant Principal ~ Jill Tolsma, Instructional Coach

Hello Glennwood Families,

We have had another awesome week at Glennwood! Kindergarten and 2nd grade students have been working hard on spring MAP testing. First grade students will complete MAP Testing next week. MAP scores will be available to parents on Infinite Campus Parent Portal at the end of the school year along with final report cards.

It is hard to believe that we only have 15 days of school left after this week! You will always find Glennwood Events on our school calendar, but we have also created a Google Doc to make it a bit easier for families to keep up with our end-of-the-year activities. We will update it weekly as needed this last month of school. Please check it out HERE.

We have two Community Circles remaining on the school year - May 12 with kindergarten hosting and the last day of school, May 26 with 2nd-grade hosting. We will celebrate all May birthdays on May 12 and all June birthdays on May 26. (We celebrated July birthdays in August.) If you have a child with a May or June birthday, please make note of these two dates when your child's birthday will be recognized at Community Circle.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Gyimah Whitaker, CSD's new Superintendent, to our amazing school on Wednesday, April 26. Dr. Whitaker spent the day visiting classes and meeting with a number of student and staff focus groups. The purpose of her visit to Glennwood (and the other CSD schools) was to gather data on our strengths, as well as our areas for growth. She recognized our strong sense of “Crew” and the warm school climate. I look forward to working with Dr. Whitaker beginning this summer.

I know I have said this before, but I am so grateful to be the principal at Glennwood. I love our staff, students and families! Our crew has certainly felt appreciated this week with all of the special treats for Staff Appreciation Week. Thank you so much to our PTA and parent volunteers for showering us with love, care, food, massages, and even car washes!

An extra special thanks go out to Cynthia of Cynthia Mobile Detail as she donated her services and time to cleaning staff cars today. What an incredible and generous gift she and the parent volunteers gave us to make sure our cars sparkled and shined! This was a huge sacrifice of time and a lot of hard work. The staff and I feel so supported and loved.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Holly Brookins

Principal

LAST Walk & Roll Day - Next Friday, May 12, 2023

Can you believe we’ve almost made it to the last - Walk & Roll to School Day?! Please join us on your feet, your bike or your scooter (don’t forget those helmets!) and let’s get together to show CSD how Eagles SOAR, one last time! Students who walk, bike or scoot will continue to enter at their grade specific doors, where they will be counted, using our traditional marbles, by their staff door monitors, and can pick up their incentives. Don’t forget, each marble counts towards students earning extra school wide recess, with announcements made at Community Circle! For additional details (including our three Walking School Bus Routes) and a full Walk & Roll schedule for the year, please visit the Glennwood website: https://www.csdecatur.net/Domain/530 - Contact Amanda McMillan (almcmil@gmail.com) with any questions!

• We’re partnering with the American Red Cross to hold a blood drive on May 16, 2023, and we need your help to make it a success. Would you give blood and be a part of saving a life?

If not: Can I count on you to volunteer at the blood drive or post to your social networks to help recruit other donors?

• We chose the Red Cross as a community outreach partner because we want to be a part of the good that they do.

• We’ll be working together to give back to the community in a truly life-changing way since each donation we collect can help save more than one life and will touch the lives of so many more.

• Let’s show our community and hospital patients in need of blood just how much we can do. It’s not every day that we do something that has such a lifesaving impact.

• A typical blood donation takes less than one hour, and we are proud to make that available to you at Glennwood Elementary after school hours.

• We can all be part of something important when we work with the Red Cross to strengthen the blood supply and give back to our community.

• Very few people get to take an active role in helping to save a life. In fact, your donation could help save more than one life.

• Our goal is to collect 20 pints of blood and you can help us get there. Meeting our blood drive goal is important because it helps ensure hospitals can meet patient needs. Patients are counting on us.

• The Red Cross needs to collect more than 13,000 units of blood each day.

• Your donation could help patients receiving treatment for cancer or blood disorders, those undergoing transplant surgery, mothers suffering from complications from childbirth, and premature babies.

• Giving blood is simple and all it takes is about an hour of your time. If you have other questions about your eligibility, you can go to RedCrossBlood.org or talk to the Red Cross staff at the blood drive.

• Please make an appointment to help ensure a smooth donor flow at the blood drive. Sign up at RedCrossBlood.org and enter sponsor code GLENNWOODES. You can also download the free Red Cross Blood Donor App to make your appointment and track your blood donations.

ATTENTION First Grade Families: Volunteers are needed to set up/decorate the Glenlake Park Pavilion for the 2nd Grade Picnic the morning of May 23rd. Having participated in this annual Glennwood tradition last year, we can attest that it is a fun and easy way to pay it forward! Check out the sign up to see how you can help! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4FAAA82CA5F49-2ndgrade

Attention Second Grade Families! On Tuesday, May 23, we will gather in Glennwood's auditorium at 8:30am to celebrate our second graders at the annual Moving Forth Ceremony. The ceremony will be followed by a picnic at Glenlake Park, from 10am-1pm, and you are welcome to join in on the fun!

Please help us plan ahead for food/beverage needs at the picnic by letting us know if any adults or siblings in your family will attend. RSVP HERE only if members of your family plan to come to the picnic. This is just to give us a rough idea of how many to expect at the picnic, so don't worry if something changes or you aren't certain at this point. There is no need to RSVP on behalf of your 2nd grader, as we are already counting on them. We'll collect responses through Friday, May 12.

TALLEY STREET RISING 3RD GRADE EVENTS

Hello future Talley Tiger parents and students! We are so excited to have you as a part of our crew for the 23-24 school year. We have a couple of events that we hope will get you excited and help with the transition to upper elementary school. To begin, we look forward to hosting our rising third graders on Tuesday, May 16th (Winnona Park) and Wednesday, May 17th (Clairemont/Glenwood). The students will be given a tour of the school by our student House leaders and will see inside a 3rd grade classroom.

In addition, all rising 3rd grade parents are invited to an information night on Wednesday, 5/17 from 6-7. It will include meeting 3rd grade teachers, learning more about the school, and taking a tour.

We look forward to meeting you and your children next month. Should you have any questions or concerns about next year, please reach out to me at bheaton@csdecatur.net.

GLENNWOOD FAMILIES!

Please complete this survey to help us best plan for and implement communication structures that will keep our Glennwood families informed of the important happenings in our school community. All schools will be conducting a similar survey.

The results of these surveys will be shared with other school and district leaders to help inform areas of strength and growth throughout the district.

This survey should take you approximately 10 minutes to complete and will provide us with valuable information about our communication platforms, frequency, and content. Thank you for your support.

Extra Mile Awards

Students: Do you know a teacher or CSD employee who has gone “the extra mile” this year? Nominate them for the CSD Extra Mile Award! The Extra Mile Award is an annual award that allows students to show appreciation for the teachers or staff they feel go above and beyond what is expected of them.

Students (not parents) at any grade level can write an essay describing how their teacher (or staff member) goes the extra mile (parents can help younger children write the essay). The essays should be detailed and describe how the employee goes above and beyond.

Click here to submit a nomination. The deadline is May 31.

These awards will be presented at the CSD Opening Day Celebration in July.
