DELRAN HIGH SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
Delran High School, an inclusive learning community, provides educational opportunities for intellectual development while valuing the importance of cultural diversity and tradition.
A Message from Mr. Finkle!
Happy and Healthy New Year to you and your family. I can't believe that half of the school year is almost over. On that note, we are beginning the process of finalizing our plans for the 2020-2021 school year.
On Wednesday, January 15th, we will host our annual AP/College Accelerated Program(CAP) Information Evening from 6:00 to 7:15 pm. The administration will give a general overview of our AP Program and our CAP Program. We will then answer any questions that you have about AP, CAP, and the differences! You will also have time to review AP materials and to speak with our AP students who are presently taking the courses. THERE HAVE BEEN CHANGES IN THE CAP PROGRAM, SO IF YOUR CHILD PLANS TO TAKE A CAP COURSE, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO BE PRESENT TO UNDERSTAND THE CHANGES!
Our annual scheduling meetings with the students will be held on Thursday, January 16th, where the high school administration will highlight new courses and answer questions about scheduling courses and the process for the 2020-21 school year. The waiver process is the same and the Schedule Waiver Form has a hard deadline of February 28, 2020.
Click here for all the documents you will need to help your child pick his/her courses for the next school year. All documents are posted on our web site too.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me at dfinkle@delranschools.org or (856) 461-6100 x3005.

DHS HAPPENINGS
Congrats December Students of the Month
Congratulations to Brooke Wachter and Dustin Desher who were nominated to be our December Students of the Month!
Brooke was nominated by Mrs. Erica DeMichele, Mrs. Mary Jo Hutchinson and Mrs. Valerie Bowers because of her character, respect, leadership responsibility, and citizenship. Brooke is an energetic, kind and patient STEM Ambassador for the Delran Innovation & Fabrication Lab. Even though she works a part-time job, in addition to her high achieving academic schedule, Brooke spends as much time in both the Fab Lab as well as with the Life Skills students at DHS. She was the primary educator for the Light Up the Winter Solstice STEM engagement as well as the Teacher Professional Development Series: Ornament and Coaster Making. She realizes the potential in a learner, be it a special needs student or a high school teacher. Brooke has been instrumental to the opening of the Life Skills Program and the start of the Unified Sports Program. Her love for special education and her determination for inclusion speaks volumes about her character. She attends special education night events and helps with fundraisers/projects taking place in the Life Skills room. She added Unified Soccer and Bowling to her busy schedule and has made life-long friendships with our Life Skills classmates. We have never met a student who was more sure of what she wanted to do in life and who was going to work harder to get there.
Dustin was nominated by Mrs. Jacquelyn McGhee and Mrs. Karen Schmidt because of his character, respect, leadership responsibility, school spirit, good work ethic, diligence, and citizenship. Dustin made an idea from a loose talk in a graphic design class a full-blown successful reality. Shortly after the Homecoming Dance, he was discussing how much fun he had and that he wished there was a winter dance. Dustin worked from the ground up starting with a petition and attended meetings with the administration in order to organize and create a dance that was a huge success. He was not intimidated by the fact that he was not on the Student Council or any of the other organizations, and instead, let his excitement and passion for the event spread and inspired and enlisted the help of these other groups. He learned valuable lessons about how much work it takes to run an event and how to overcome obstacles along the way. His enthusiasm, drive, and leadership led him to create an event that the entire school enjoyed. We hope his spirit can set a great example for his peers for not waiting for someone else to make ideas happened but to take the bulls by the horns yourself. We enjoyed getting daily updates on the process and we are incredibly happy that he was so successful.
Congratulations Brooke and Dustin!

Delran Innovation & Fabrication Lab News
Students on the 3rd Grade Green Team Committee for the Philadelphia Zoo’s UNLESS Contest attended a field trip to the FAB Lab on January 3rd to create posters to encourage more learning about Monarch Butterfly's behavior and needs. With pollination needed to grow food, the Monarch is a very important species, as are all pollinators. The use of the digital fabrication tool, die-cut machines, and Fab@School software, student designs came to life, and lots of learning took place.
Additional STEM Family Engagement events for the 2019-2020 school year are planned to coincide with New Jersey STEM Month in March, as well as with the annual Delran STEM Fair in May. Go to https://www.delranstem.org/ for more info!

Scheduling for 2020-2021 School Year
Scheduling for the 2020-2021 academic year is beginning. All students will attend a scheduling meeting on Thursday, January 16th and will be directed to enter their elective requests and alternate options in the Realtime portal. Teachers will be discussing the course level recommendations in the next week or so. If you and your child would like to override the teacher's recommendation, a Waiver Form must be completed prior to Friday, February 28th. Guidance Counselors will begin meeting with students the last week of January through mid-March to review the teacher recommendations and electives they chose. Ninth graders will be seen first, followed by 10th and 11th graders. This is a change from years past; however, understand that these meetings are held to choose the courses for next year. When a student meets with his/her counselor has no bearing on what courses are actually scheduled. Courses are not first-come, first-served. The scheduling program is designed to meet all student's needs.
Scholarship Opportunities
Don’t miss out on Scholarship Opportunities! Many application deadlines are approaching in December and January. Get the information you need to apply under the Guidance Department section of our website or have your student stop in the Guidance Office to inquire about available scholarships!
Naviance
All students 10th -12th have an account.
Naviance is a web-based tool that allows your student to explore their values, personality, strengths and correlate them to career clusters. It directs them to colleges with suggested majors so that they can build a list of colleges to explore.
Seniors and Juniors can see upcoming college visitations and request to attend directly in Naviance.
All students should be building their personal activity resume.
Ask your student to share with you what they are doing in Naviance.
College Planning
Is your senior ready to send out college applications this fall? Click here to review what to do this summer to prepare for college admissions.

The Winter season at Delran High School is already shaping up to be an exciting one!
The Boys’ and Girls’ Bowling Teams continue to improve their scores and are enjoying their time together. Their next match is at Laurel Lanes against Cinnaminson today!
The Unified Bowling Team had some time off during the holidays but has resumed practicing during their Physical Education class. The students are excited to get back on the lanes and their next match is here. They will be competing against Cherry Hill West at Laurel Lanes today!
The Girls’ Basketball Team came away with a convincing 52-20 victory over Salem Tech on Tuesday. The Lady Bears are really working hard at practice and it is showing on the court. Their next game is Friday, January 10th at home against Cinnaminson.
The Boys’ Basketball Team won the Collingswood Tournament over Winter Break and earned a hard-fought victory over Florence on Tuesday night. Their defense is outstanding and it causes many opponents to get frustrated. Their next game is away at Holy Cross on Friday, January 10th.
The Wrestling Team defeated Palmyra Monday night by a score of 74-3. Each bout was exciting and the athletes are improving every time they get on the mat. Their next match will be a quad at Ewing High School on Saturday, January 11th.
The members of the Girls’ Wrestling Team were given two opportunities to showcase their talents at two tournaments during Winter break. Pennsauken hosted the Queen of the East on December 22nd and Ewing hosted a tournament on December 30th. Several Lady Bears won their weight class or reached the finals. The Lady Bears are doing a great job at practice because they are listening to every word spoken by each coach and focusing every time they get on the mat. Keep up the great work ladies!
The Swim Team continues to earn victories in their new conference. The team earned a victory over Holy Cross on Saturday to improve to 4-1 on the young season. Many students are getting opportunities to get in the pool and show what they can do. Their next meet is today against Collingswood/Audubon at the Kroc Center at 6:30 pm.
"Beyond The Scoreboard" is a great video that explains the many benefits of participating in athletics.
